Abstract

An antenna system for use in a communication system is provided. A first antenna is configured to receive a first signal having a first polarization. A second antenna is configured to receive a second signal having a second polarization and configured to receive a third signal having a third polarization. The second polarization is rotated from the first polarization. The third polarization is rotated from the second polarization.

Claims (39)

1. An antenna system, comprising:

a first antenna having first antenna elements configured to receive a signal having a first polarization; and

a second antenna having second antenna elements and third antenna elements, the second antenna elements configured to receive a signal having a second polarization rotated from the first polarization, the third antenna elements configured to receive a signal having a third polarization rotated from the second polarization.

2. The antenna system of claim 1 further comprising:

a third antenna having fourth antenna elements configured to receive another signal having the first polarization.

3. The antenna system of claim 2 further comprising:

a platform, wherein the first antenna, the second antenna, and the third antenna mount on the platform.

4. The antenna system of claim 1 wherein the first polarization received by the first antenna elements comprises a vertical polarization.

5. The antenna system of claim 1 wherein the first polarization received by the first antenna elements comprises a horizontal polarization.

6. The antenna system of claim 1 wherein the second polarization received by the second antenna elements is rotated substantially 45 degrees from the first polarization received by the first antenna elements.

7. The antenna system of claim 6 wherein the third polarization received by the third antenna elements is substantially orthogonal to the second polarization received by the second antenna elements.

8. The antenna system of claim 7 wherein:

the first antenna elements are configured to transmit a signal having the first polarization;

the second antenna elements are configured to transmit a signal having the second polarization rotated substantially 45 degrees from the first polarization; and

the third antenna elements are configured to transmit a signal having the third polarization substantially orthogonal to the second polarization.

9. The antenna system of claim 1 further comprising:

a low noise amplifier connected to the first antenna elements, the second antenna elements, and the third antenna elements.

10. The antenna system of claim 1 wherein:

the first polarization received by the first antenna elements comprises a horizontal polarization; and

the first antenna further comprises fourth antenna elements configured to receive a signal having a vertical polarization.

11. A method of operating an antenna system, the method comprising:

receiving a signal having a first polarization in first antenna elements of a first antenna;

receiving a signal having a second polarization rotated from the first polarization in second antenna elements of a second antenna; and

receiving a signal having a third polarization rotated from the second polarization in third antenna elements of the second antenna.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

receiving another signal having the first polarization in fourth antenna elements of a third antenna.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the first antenna, the second antenna, and the third antenna are mounted on a platform.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the first polarization received by the first antenna elements comprises a vertical polarization.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein the first polarization received by the first antenna elements comprises a horizontal polarization.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the second polarization received by the second antenna elements is rotated substantially 45 degrees from the first polarization received by the first antenna elements.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the third polarization received by the third antenna elements is substantially orthogonal to the second polarization received by the second antenna elements.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising:

transmitting a signal having the first polarization from the first antenna elements;

transmitting a signal having the second polarization from the second antenna elements, wherein the second polarization is rotated substantially 45 degrees from the first polarization; and

transmitting a signal having the third polarization from the third antenna elements, wherein the third polarization is substantially orthogonal to the second polarization.

19. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

connecting the first antenna elements, the second antenna elements, and the third antenna elements to a low noise amplifier.

20. The method of claim 11 wherein the first polarization received by the first antenna elements comprises a horizontal polarization, the method further comprising:

receiving a signal having a vertical polarization in fourth antenna elements of the first antenna.
