Abstract

A tube assembly of the present invention has at least one subunit with at least one dry insert generally surrounding the subunit which may be disposed within a tube, thereby forming a tube assembly. The subunit includes a fiber optic ribbon and a sheath, wherein the sheath is tight-buffered about the fiber optic ribbon, thereby inhibiting buckling of the ribbon during temperature variations. Additionally, the tube assembly can be a portion of a fiber optic cable having a sheath that may include a plurality of strength members and a cable jacket. In other embodiments, the subunits and dry insert are disposed within a cavity, thereby forming a tubeless cable. Additionally, subunits may include a marking indicia for denoting the security level.

Claims (16)

1. A fiber optic cable comprising:

a plurality of subunits, the plurality of subunits each including a single respective fiber optic ribbon and a respective sheath that is tight-buffered about the single respective fiber optic ribbon so that each respective sheath must be breached to access the respective fiber optic ribbon thereby providing a security feature for each subunit, wherein each fiber optic ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers connected by a matrix material and the plurality of subunits form a subunit stack;

at least one dry insert, the dry insert disposed about the plurality of subunits for coupling the plurality of subunits within the fiber optic cable, wherein the plurality of subunits have a normalized pull-out force between about 0.5 N/m and about 5.0 N/m;

at least one strength member; and

a cable jacket.

2. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , the subunit stack having at least two subunits with the respective ribbons of the at least two subunits having a different number of optical fibers in the respective ribbons.

3. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , further comprising a tube, the tube housing at least a portion of the subunit stack, thereby forming a tube assembly.

4. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical component.

5. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , the fiber optic cable being a figure-eight cable.

6. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , the fiber optic cable having a water-swell ratio of about three or more.

7. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , further comprising an armor layer.

8. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , the fiber optic cable having a portion being formed from a flame-retardant material.

9. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , the at least one dry insert including an open cell polyurethane foam.

10. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , further comprising a normalized subunit coupling force between about 0.5 N/m and about 5 N/m.

11. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , the at least one dry insert having a first layer that is compressible which is laminated to a second water-swellable layer.

12. The fiber optic cable of claim 1 , the sheath having a thickness of about 0.3 millimeters.
