Administering workload groups

1. A method for mapping business concepts related to the processing of a plurality of requests on a database system to database system feature settings, including:

delaying submission of a portion of the plurality of requests to the database system for processing based on rules;

mapping each request submitted to the database system for processing to database feature settings by mapping business concepts associated with each request using workload definitions, wherein the workload definitions include workload classification attributes, workload throttling attributes, workload exception attributes, workload prioritization attributes, and workload enforcement prioritization attributes;

wherein the workload classification attributes include, for each of one or more workload definitions, one or more business concepts associated with requests that will identify requests to be classified to that workload, and

wherein the workload throttling attributes include, for each of one or more workload definitions one or more attributes of requests classified to that workload that determine if such requests are rejected, throttled, or run with special privileges; and

providing a tree view of the mapping which includes:

a first node for the rules;

a second node for the workload definitions; and

a third node for priority scheduling.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rules include:

filtering rules; and

throttling rules.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rules include:

classification rules; and

exception rules.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein delaying submission includes:

rejecting the portion of the plurality of requests for processing by the database system.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the business concepts related to the processing of requests submitted to the database system include who, what and where information and the method further includes:

establishing who information, such that the filtering rules do not apply to requests with which such information is associated.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the throttling rules include:

rules under which the requests submitted to the database system for processing are delayed.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the business concepts related to the processing of requests submitted to the database system include who, what and where information and the method further includes:

establishing who information, such that the throttling rules do not apply to requests with which such information is associated.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the business concepts related to the processing of requests submitted to the database system include who, what and where information and where the throttling rules include:

who and where information, such that requests with which such information is associated are delayed.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein workload exception attributes include:

for each of one or more workload definitions:

one or more exception conditions; and

for each exception condition:

a threshold that determines when the exception condition has occurred; and

an action to be taken when the threshold associated with the exception condition is crossed.

10. A computer program, stored on a tangible storage medium, for use in mapping business concepts related to the processing of a plurality of requests on a database system to database system feature settings, the program including executable instructions that cause a computer to:

delay submission of a portion of the plurality of requests to the database system for processing based on rules; and

map each request submitted to the database system for processing to database feature settings by mapping business concepts associated with each request using workload definitions, where the workload definitions include workload classification attributes, workload throttling attributes, workload exception attributes, workload prioritization attributes, and workload enforcement prioritization attributes,

wherein the workload classification attributes include, for each of one or more workload definitions, one or more business concepts associated with requests that will identify requests to be classified to that workload, and

wherein the workload throttling attributes include, for each of one or more workload definitions, one or more attributes of requests classified to that workload that determine if such requests are rejected, throttled, or run with special privileges; and

provide a tree view of the mapping, including:

a first node for the rules;

a second node for the workload definitions; and

a third node for priority scheduling.

11. The computer program of claim 10 , wherein the rules include:

filtering rules; and

throttling rules.

12. The computer program of claim 10 , wherein the rules include:

classification rules; and

exception rules.

13. The computer program of claim 11 , wherein the filtering rules include:

rules under which the requests submitted to the database system for processing are rejected.

14. The computer program of claim 11 , wherein the business concepts related to the processing of requests submitted to the database system include who, what and where information and the program includes executable instructions that cause a computer to:

establish who information, such that the filtering rules do not apply to requests with which such information is associated.

15. The computer program of claim 11 , wherein the throttling rules include:

rules under which requests submitted to the database system for processing are delayed.

16. The computer program of claim 11 , wherein the business concepts related to the processing of requests submitted to the database system include who, what and where information and the program includes executable instructions that cause a computer to:

establish who information, such that the throttling rules do not apply to requests with which such information is associated.

17. The computer program of claim 11 , wherein the business concepts related to the processing of requests submitted to the database system include who, what and where information and the throttling rules include:

who and where information, such that requests with which such information is associated are delayed.

18. The computer program of claim 10 , wherein the workload exception attributes include:

for each of one or more workload definitions:

one or more exception conditions; and

for each exception condition:

a threshold that determines when the exception condition has occurred; and

an action to be taken when the threshold associated with the exception condition is crossed.

19. A database system including:

a massively parallel processing system including:

one or more nodes;

a plurality of CPUs, each of the one or more nodes providing access to one or more CPUs;

a plurality of data storage facilities each of the one or more CPUs providing access to one or more data storage facilities;

a process for execution on the massively parallel processing system for mapping business concepts related to the processing of a plurality of requests on a database system to database system feature settings, the process including:

delaying submission of a portion of the plurality of requests to the database system for processing based on rules;

mapping each request submitted to the database system for processing to database feature settings by mapping business concepts associated with each request using workload definitions, wherein the workload definitions include workload classification attributes, workload throttling attributes, workload exception attributes, workload prioritization attributes, and workload enforcement prioritization attributes;

wherein the workload classification attributes include, for each of one or more workload definitions, one or more business concepts associated with requests that will identify requests to be classified to that workload, and

wherein the workload throttling attributes include, for each of one or more workload definitions, one or more attributes of requests classified to that workload that determine if such requests are rejected, throttled, or run with special privileges; and

providing a tree view of the mapping which includes:

a first node for the rules;

a second node for the workload definitions; and

a third node for priority scheduling.

20. The database system of claim 19 , wherein the rules include:

filtering rules; and

throttling rules.

21. The database system of claim 19 , wherein the rules include:

classification rules; and

exception rules.

22. The database system of claim 20 , wherein delaying submission includes:
