Abstract

A neurological control system for modulating activity of any component or structure comprising the entirety or portion of the nervous system, or any structure interfaced thereto, generally referred to herein as a “nervous system component.” The neurological control system generates neural modulation signals delivered to a nervous system component through one or more neuromodulators to control neurological state and prevent neurological signs and symptoms. Such treatment parameters may be derived from a neural response to previously delivered neural modulation signals sensed by one or more sensors, each configured to sense a particular characteristic indicative of a neurological or psychiatric condition.

Claims (32)

1. A system for neural modulation in the treatment of disease, comprising:

a signal conditioning circuit;

a sensor array in electronic communication with said signal conditioning circuit;

a signal processor in electronic communication with said signal conditioning circuit, wherein said signal processor performs a neural state estimation;

a control circuit in electronic communication with said signal processor, said control circuit determines parameters of a neuromodulation signal, said neuromodulation signal being adapted to control said neural state to remain within a normal range;

an output stage circuit in electronic communication with said control circuit to generate said neuromodulation signal; and

a stimulating electrode array, in electronic communication with said output stage circuit and configured to deliver said neuromodulation signal to a patient.

2. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neurological disease comprises epilepsy, and wherein said neural state is controlled to remain within a range in which the patient is at a low probability of having a seizure.

3. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neurological disease comprises epilepsy, and wherein said neural state is controlled to remain outside of a borderline range in which the patient has an increased probability of having a seizure relative to the normal range.

4. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neurological disease comprises epilepsy, and wherein said neural state is controlled to remain outside of a critical range in which the patient has an increased probability of having a seizure relative to the normal range.

5. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neural state in said normal range substantially prevents the occurrence of at least one of neurological signs and neurological symptoms.

6. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neural state is controlled to prevent the occurrence of precursors to at least one of neurological signs and neurological symptoms.

7. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neural state is controlled to prevent entry into a critical range, in which the occurrence of neurological signs and neurological symptoms are at an increased probability.

8. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neural state is controlled to prevent entry into a critical range, in which the occurrence of precursors to at least one of neurological signs and neurological symptoms are at an increased probability.

9. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said neural state is controlled to reduce an occurrence of EEG abnormalities.

10. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein control of said neural state controls neural chaos.

11. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein control of said neural state controls synchronization of neural chaos.

12. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein control of said neural state controls neural entrainment.

13. A system as recited in claim 1 , wherein control of said neural state controls neural disentrainment.

14. A system for modulating the activity of at least one nervous system component, the system comprising:

at least one means for sensing neural activity, wherein each means for sensing neural activity is constructed and arranged to sense at least one parameter;

at least one means for calculating neural state, wherein said neural state is a function of said at least one parameter;

at least one means for calculating a neural modulation signal, wherein said neural modulation signal is based upon said neural state and is adapted to drive the neural state towards or maintain the neural state within a range in which the patient is at a low probability of having a seizure;

at least one means for modulating neural activity, wherein each means for modulating neural activity is constructed and arranged to deliver said neural modulation signal to at least one nervous system component or non-neural structure.

15. A system as recited in claim 14 , wherein said neural state is a function of neural chaos.

16. A system as in claim 14 , wherein said neural state is substantially representative of at least one of a disease state, a magnitude of symptoms, and a response to therapy.

17. A method for the treatment of neurological disease comprising:

sensing neural signals using at least one sensor;

calculating a neural state from at least one of said neural signals;

calculating at least one neural modulation signal from said neural state; and

driving the patient's neural state towards or maintaining the patient's neural state within a normal range in which the patient is at a low probability of having a neurological symptom by delivering the neural modulation signal to a patient via at least one neuromodulator.

18. A method as recited in claim 17 , wherein said neural state is a function of neural chaos.
