Abstract

An automated connectorization system for processing fiber optic connectors. The system can include one or more of a polishing station, a cleaning station, a tuning station, a testing station, an SC connector adjust station, an FC connector key press station, and a dust cap station. The connectors can be automatically conveyed and processed through the stations of the system from initial hackle removal through to dust cap application.

Claims (37)

1. An automated system for processing fiber optic connectors, comprising:

a carrier configured to carry a fiber including a plurality of fiber optic connectors;

a polishing station configured to polish the fiber optic connectors;

a tuning station configured to tune the fiber optic connectors;

a testing station configured to test the fiber optic connectors;

an SC connector adjust station configured to adjust a housing with respect to a ferrule of each of the fiber optic connectors, wherein the SC connector adjust station includes a connector body receiver that holds the housing of each of the fiber optic connectors, and a clamp that clamps the ferrule of each of the fiber optic connectors and rotates the ferrule relative to the housing to a tuned position;

an FC connector key press station configured to press a key onto each of the fiber optic connectors, wherein the FC connector key press station includes a handler that feeds the key from a plurality of keys to a key holder, and the key holder presses the key onto one of the fiber optic connectors; and

a drive mechanism configured to automatically move the carrier through the polishing station, the tuning station, and the testing station.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one station selected from a group consisting of a cleaning station, and a dust cap station.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a cleaning station configured to clean the fiber optic connectors.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a dust cap station configured to apply a dust cap to each of the fiber optic connectors.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the polishing station is a first station, the tuning station is a third station, and the testing station is a fourth station, and wherein the system further comprises a cleaning station as a second station.

6. A system for processing fiber optic connectors, comprising:

a carrier configured to carry a fiber including a plurality of fiber optic connectors;

a polishing station for polishing the fiber optic connectors;

a tuning station for tuning the fiber optic connectors, wherein the tuning station includes a master cable that rotates and engages each of the fiber optic connectors at a plurality of orientations to determine key locations for the fiber optic connectors, wherein the system stores the key locations in memory for SC connectors, and wherein the fiber optic connectors are released and the master cable is rotated while engaged with each of the fiber optic connectors to rotate the fiber optic connectors to the key locations for FC connectors;

a drive mechanism configured to automatically move the carrier through the polishing station and the tuning station; and

a controller that controls the drive mechanism, the polishing station, and the tuning station as the carrier is moved through the polishing station and the tuning station.

7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising at least one station selected from a group consisting of a cleaning station, a testing station, an SC connector adjust station, an FC connector key press station, and a dust cap station.

8. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a cleaning station configured to clean the fiber optic connectors.

9. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a testing station configured to test the fiber optic connectors.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the polishing station is a first station, the tuning station is a third station, and the testing station is a fourth station, and wherein the system further comprises a cleaning station as a second station.

11. An automated method for processing fiber optic connectors, comprising:

conveying the fiber optic connectors to a polishing station; polishing the fiber optic connectors; conveying the fiber optic connectors to a tuning station, wherein the tuning station includes a master cable that rotates and engages each of the fiber optic connectors at a plurality of orientations to determine key locations for the fiber optic connectors, wherein the key locations are stored in memory for SC connectors, and wherein the fiber optic connectors are released and the master cable is rotated while engaged with each of the fiber optic connectors to rotate the fiber optic connectors to the key locations for FC connectors; tuning the fiber optic connectors; conveying the fiber optic connectors to a dust cap station; and applying a dust cap only to fiber optic connectors that successftilly complete testing.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

conveying the fiber optic connectors to a testing station; and

testing the fiber optic connectors.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

conveying the fiber optic connectors to a cleaning station; and

cleaning the fiber optic connectors.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

conveying the fiber optic connectors to an SC connector adjust station; and

adjusting a housing with respect to a ferrule of each of the fiber optic connectors.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

conveying the fiber optic connectors to an FC connector key press station; and

pressing on a key on each of the fiber optic connectors.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of applying the dust cap further comprises applying the dust cap only to fiber optic connectors that successfully complete all stations.
