Abstract

An embodiment of the invention is a technique to equalize received samples. An equalizer to equalize a multidimensional signal transmitted over a communication channel and having a dimensionality of four or higher. The equalizer is adaptively decision directed trained.

Claims (39)

1. An apparatus comprising:

an equalizer to equalize a multidimensional signal transmitted over a communication channel and having a dimensionality of four or higher, the equalizer being adaptively decision directed trained, the equalizer comprising a phase and polarization rotator to jointly rotate phase and polarization;

wherein the equalizer produces soft outputs being used in soft channel decoding and iteratively produces outputs using a priori information provided by a channel decoder.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the equalizer is one of a linear equalizer, a decision-feedback equalizer, a Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimator (MLSE) equalizer, and a combination of linear, decision-feedback, and MLSE equalizers.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the MLSE equalizer compensates linear and nonlinear distortions in the communication channel.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the MLSE equalizer compensates for non-gaussian noise.

5. An apparatus comprising:

an equalizer to equalize a multidimensional signal transmitted over a communication channel and having a dimensionality of four or higher, the equalizer being adaptively decision directed trained, the equalizer comprising a phase and polarization rotator to jointly rotate phase and polarization;

a phase estimator to estimate a phase angle vector; and

a polarization angle estimator to estimate a polarization angle.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the phase angle vector and the polarization angle are used to compensate different phase errors for each polarization, the different phase errors being caused at least by phase noise at a transmitter and at a local oscillator at the communication channel.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the equalizer is one of a linear equalizer, a decision-feedback equalizer, a Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimator (MLSE) equalizer, and a combination of linear, decision-feedback, and MLSE equalizers.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the MLSE equalizer compensates linear and nonlinear distortions in the communication channel.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the MLSE equalizer compensates for non-gaussian noise.

10. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the equalizer produces soft outputs being used in soft channel decoding.

11. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the equalizer iteratively produces outputs using a priori information provided by a channel decoder.

12. A method comprising:

equalizing a multidimensional signal transmitted over a communication channel and having a dimensionality of four or higher using an equalizer that is adaptively decision directed trained, equalizing comprising jointly rotating phase and polarization using a phase and polarization rotator;

wherein equalizing comprises producing soft outputs being used in soft channel decoding, and iteratively producing outputs using a priori information provided by a channel decoder.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the equalizer is one of a linear equalizer, a decision-feedback equalizer, a Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimator (MLSE) equalizer, and a combination of linear, decision-feedback, and MLSE equalizers.

14. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

estimating a phase angle vector using a phase estimator; and

estimating a polarization angle using a polarization angle estimator.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein the phase angle vector and the polarization angle are used to compensate different phase errors for each polarization, the different phase errors being caused at least by phase noise at a transmitter and at a local oscillator at the communication channel.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein equalizing comprises compensating linear and nonlinear distortions in the communication channel using the MLSE equalizer.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein equalizing comprises compensating for non-gaussian noise using the MLSE equalizer.

18. A system comprising:

a converter to produce an electrical signal vector representing at least one of amplitude, phase, and polarization information of a modulated carrier transmitted through a communication channel with impairments; and

a signal processor coupled to the converter to process the electrical signal vector to compensate the impairments of the communication channel, the signal processor comprising

an equalizer to equalize a multidimensional signal transmitted over the communication channel and having a dimensionality of four or higher, the equalizer being adaptively decision directed trained, the equalizer comprising a phase and polarization rotator to jointly rotate phase and polarization;

wherein the equalizer iteratively produces outputs using a priori information provided by a channel decoder.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the equalizer is one of a linear equalizer, a decision-feedback equalizer, a Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimator (MLSE) equalizer, and a combination of linear, decision-feedback, and MLSE equalizers.

20. The system of claim 18 wherein the equalizer produces soft outputs being used in soft channel decoding.
