Abstract

A system and method for managing informational objects on a mobile device. A user-selectable option is displayed to a user of the mobile device. The option is associated with an action to be performed on informational objects sharing at least one specified characteristic (e.g., storing all e-mail messages that are part of the same thread in a folder, generating a distribution list of contacts belonging to a specified group). After the user has selected the option, the application identifies informational objects having the at least one specified characteristic and performs the action on the identified objects.

Claims (36)

1. A method of managing a plurality of electronic mail (e-mail) messages, the method performed by an application executing on a mobile device, the method comprising:

determining a selected e-mail message;

after determining the selected e-mail message, displaying a user-selectable option at the mobile device in response to an invocation to display a menu of user-selectable options for the selected e-mail message, the user-selectable option associated with an action to automatically store:

the selected e-mail message and

at least one non-selected e-mail message, stored in one or more source folders, that has a subject field containing a text element that is present in the subject field of the selected e-mail message,

wherein the selected e-mail message is either an e-mail message being viewed or an e-mail message selected from a displayed grouping of e-mail messages;

determining when the user-selectable option is selected after determining the selected e-mail message;

identifying the at least one non-selected e-mail message stored in the one or more source folders, wherein the at least one non-selected e-mail message is identified by the presence of the text element in the subject field of the at least one non-selected e-mail message, and wherein the identifying is in response to a determination of the selected e-mail message and a selection of the user-selectable option associated with the action; and

in response to the selection of the user-selectable option associated with the action,

creating a folder that is named according to the text element present in the subject field of each of the selected e-mail message and the identified non-selected e-mail messages, and

after creating the folder, storing data associated with said selected e-mail message and said identified non-selected e-mail messages in the created folder.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected e-mail message and said identified non-selected e-mail messages are part of a same thread.

3. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions for execution on a mobile device, wherein the instructions, when executed, perform acts of a method comprising:

determining a selected e-mail message;

after determining the selected e-mail message, displaying a user-selectable option at the mobile device in response to an invocation to display a menu of user-selectable options for the selected e-mail message, the user-selectable option associated with an action to automatically store:

the selected e-mail message and

at least one non-selected e-mail message stored, in one or more source folders, that has a subject field containing a text element that is present in the subject field of the selected e-mail message,

wherein the selected e-mail message is either an e-mail message being viewed or an e-mail message selected from a displayed grouping of e-mail messages;

determining when the user-selectable option is selected after determining the selected e-mail message;

identifying the at least one non-selected e-mail message stored in the one or more source folders, wherein the at least one non-selected e-mail message is identified by the presence of the text element in the subject field of the at least one non-selected e-mail message, and wherein the identifying is in response to a determination of the selected e-mail message and a selection of the user-selectable option associated with the action; and

in response to the selection of the user-selectable option associated with the action,

creating a folder that is named according to the text element present in the subject field of each of the selected e-mail message and the identified non-selected e-mail messages, and

after creating the folder, storing data associated with said selected e-mail message and said identified non-selected e-mail messages in the created folder.

4. A system for managing a plurality of electronic mail (e-mail) messages, the system comprising a microprocessor and at least one memory, wherein in operation, the microprocessor executes instructions of a method comprising acts of:

determining a selected e-mail message;

after determining the selected e-mail message, displaying a user-selectable option at the mobile device in response to an invocation to display a menu of user-selectable options for the selected e-mail message, the user-selectable option associated with an action to automatically store:

the selected e-mail message and

at least one non-selected e-mail message, stored in one or more source folders, that has a subject field containing a text element that is present in the subject field of the selected e-mail message,

wherein the selected e-mail message is either an e-mail message being viewed or an e-mail message selected from a displayed grouping of e-mail messages;

determining when the user-selectable option is selected after determining the selected e-mail message;

identifying the at least one non-selected e-mail message stored in the one or more source folders, wherein the at least one non-selected e-mail message is identified by the presence of the text element in the subject field of the at least one non-selected e-mail message, and wherein the identifying is in response to a determination of the selected e-mail message and a selection of the user-selectable option associated with the action; and

in response to the selection of the user-selectable option associated with the action,

creating a folder that is named according to the text element present in the subject field of each of the selected e-mail message and the identified non-selected e-mail messages, and

after creating the folder, storing data associated with said selected e-mail message and said identified non-selected e-mail messages in the created folder.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the selected e-mail message and said identified non-selected e-mail messages are part of a same thread.

6. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 3 , wherein the selected e-mail message and said identified non-selected e-mail messages are part of a same thread.
