Abstract

A vehicle traveling through an environmental media such as air experiences drag. The drag is actively modulated by energy beams which may either increase or decrease the drag. The energy beams may provide either a chemical, acoustic or electromagnetic energy at a transition region between turbulent and laminar flows or at the leading edge of a laminar flow or in the direction of a crosswind in order to facilitate the respective increase or decrease in drag. If the vehicle is a sailing ship, areas of the sails are selectively roughened or widened to enhance the thrust derived from the wind. Furthermore, the keel or hull of the sailing ship may be modified to improve the hydrodynamic characteristics of the sailing ship. If the vehicle is an automobile, the tires or road surface may be selectively heated to improve the traction of the automobile. Furthermore, the energy beams may be used to facilitate atomization of the air/fuel mixture prior to combustion in an internal combustion engine thereby improving the thrust of provided to the vehicle. Energy beams may be used to generate virtual extensions of a vehicle to enhance traveling efficiency.

Claims (34)

1. A method of enhancing atomization of a fuel in an air environment comprising the steps of:

injecting the fuel in the form of a fuel spray into the air environment to form a fuel/air mixture;

directing an energy beam into the fuel/air mixture, the energy beam facilitating atomization of the fuel in the fuel/air mixture, wherein the energy beam is a ultrasonic energy beam;

determining an amount of the fuel sprayed by said step of injecting; and

adjusting a frequency of the ultrasonic energy beam in response thereto.

2. A method of enhancing atomization of a fuel in an air environment comprising the steps of:

injecting the fuel in the form of a fuel spray into the air environment to form a fuel/air mixture;

directing an energy beam into the fuel/air mixture, the energy beam facilitating atomization of the fuel in the fuel/air mixture, wherein the energy beam is an ultrasonic energy beam;

determining a velocity of air in the air environment; and

adjusting a frequency of the ultrasonic energy beam in response thereto.

3. The method according to claim 2 wherein said steps of injecting and directing occur in an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine.

4. The method according to claim 3 wherein the intake manifold has a bend and said step of directing directs at least a portion of the energy beam at the bend, thereby deterring the fuel from separating from the fuel/air mixture at the manifold bend.

5. The method according to claim 2 wherein said steps of injecting and directing occur in a combustion chamber.

6. The method according to claim 2 wherein the energy beam is selected from a group consisting of acoustic, ultrasonic, microwave, electromagnetic infrared, laser, thermal and combinations thereof.

7. A method of enhancing atomization of a fuel in an air environment comprising the steps of:

injecting the fuel in the form of a fuel spray into the air environment to form a fuel/air mixture;

directing an energy beam into the fuel/air mixture, the enemy beam facilitating atomization of the fuel in the fuel/air mixture

determining an amount of the fuel sprayed by said step of injecting; and

adjusting a frequency of the energy beam in response thereto.

8. The method according to claim 7 wherein the fuel/air mixture is ignited by an energy source other Man the energy beam.

9. The method according to claim 7 wherein the energy beam is an ultrasonic energy beam.

10. The method according to claim 7 wherein said steps of injecting and directing occur in an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine.

11. The method according to claim 10 wherein the intake manifold has a bend and said step of directing directs at least a portion of the energy beam at the bend, thereby deterring the fuel from separating from the fuel/air mixture at the manifold bend.

12. The method according to claim 7 wherein said steps of injecting and directing occur in a combustion chamber.

13. A method of enhancing atomization of a fuel in an air environment comprising the steps of:

injecting the fuel in the form of a fuel spray into the air environment to form a fuel/air mixture;

directing an energy beam into the fuel/air mixture, the energy beam facilitating atomization of the fuel in the fuel/air mixture;

determining a velocity of air in the air environment; and

adjusting a frequency of the energy beam in response thereto.

14. The method according to claim 13 wherein the fuel/air mixture is ignited by an energy source other than the energy beam.

15. The method according to claim 13 wherein the energy beam is an ultrasonic energy beam.

16. The method according to claim 13 wherein said steps of injecting and directing occur in an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine.

17. The method according to claim 16 wherein the intake manifold has a bend and said step of directing directs at least a portion of the energy beam at the bend, thereby deterring the fuel from separating from the air at the manifold bend.

18. The method according to claim 13 wherein said steps of injecting and directing occur in a combustion chamber.
