Abstract

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates with a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates. The liquid crystal layer includes a photopolymerizable component mixed therein, and there is a pixel electrode formed on one of the substrates. The pixel electrode includes at least two pixel slit areas separated by a liquid crystal domain boundary area, wherein each of the pixel slit areas includes a plurality of generally parallel slits therein. Further, an additional electrode, having the same potential as the pixel electrode, is formed in at least a portion of the liquid crystal domain boundary area without extending into any of the pixel slit areas.

Claims (17)

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

a liquid crystal layer, including a polymer polymerized by one of heat and light radiation, sandwiched between a pair of substrates;

a pixel electrode, including an electrode portion and a plurality of slits, formed on one of said pair of substrates; a source electrode and a Cs intermediate electrode, having a same potential as said pixel electrode, formed between said pixel electrode and said one of said pair of said substrates; and

a Cs bus line located between said Cs intermediate electrode and said one of said pair of substrates;

wherein said source electrode is formed along a liquid crystal domain boundary and all portions of said source electrode are located between said electrode portion of said pixel electrode and said one of said pair of said substrates.

2. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

a pair of substrates;

a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between said pair of substrates, said liquid crystal layer including a photopolymerizable component mixed therein;

a pixel electrode formed on one of said substrates, said pixel electrode including at least two pixel slit areas separated by a liquid crystal domain boundary area, wherein each of said pixel slit areas include a plurality of generally parallel slits therein;

an additional electrode, having the same potential as the pixel electrode, formed in at least a portion of the liquid crystal domain boundary area without extending into any of the pixel slit areas.

3. The liquid crystal device according to claim 2 , wherein said additional electrode is a source electrode.

4. The liquid crystal device according to claim 2 , wherein said additional electrode is a capacitance intermediate electrode.

5. The liquid crystal device according to claim 2 wherein said additional electrode and said pixel electrode are electrically connected to each other via a contact hole.

6. The liquid crystal device according to claim 2 wherein said photopolymerizable component constitutes 0.3 weight percent of said liquid crystal layer.

7. The liquid crystal device according to claim 2 wherein said liquid crystal layer includes a negative-type liquid crystal material.

8. The liquid crystal device according to claim 2 wherein each of said pixel areas includes at least three of said generally parallel slits therein.

9. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein said pixel electrode is connected to said source electrode and said Cs intermediate electrode through one contact hole.
