Abstract

The present invention provides a slipsheet and/or divider sheet and a method for making the same, the sheet having an imprint or an embossing that provides a raised planar surface. The raised planar surface preferably comprises a plurality of ridges, crowns or crests, which are preferably arranged in a pattern throughout an upper surface of the sheet. To make the sheet, a die can be etched to have protuberances or bumps, and the die is preferably pressed into a sheet of pliable thermoplastic material. The sheet thus made has a plurality of indentation formed by the protuberances or bumps on the die, and the sheet has a planar outer surface comprising a plurality of ridges, crowns and crests between the indentations.

Claims (41)

1. A slipsheet, comprising:

a sheet of material that functions as a pallet for supporting goods while the goods are transported by a forklift vehicle equipped with a platen and a push-pull device, the sheet of material comprising:

an upper layer of material, the upper layer having a top surface for contact with the goods; and

a lower layer of material, the lower layer having a bottom surface for contact with the platen of the fork-lift vehicle,

the bottom surface comprising a recessed surface and a continuous grid of ridges that provides a contact surface, wherein the recessed surface comprises a plurality of indentations arranged in a pattern,

wherein the upper layer of material and the lower layer of material are different compositions of matter,

wherein the bottom surface is a low-friction surface so that the platen can slide under the sheet of material,

wherein the top surface is a high-friction surface compared to the bottom surface, and

wherein the sheet of material has an edge and a tab along a major portion of the edge so that the push-pull device can grip the tab while the platen slides under the sheet of material.

2. The slipsheet of claim 1 , wherein the lower layer of material is high density polyethylene.

3. The slipsheet of claim 1 , wherein the upper layer of material is linear low density polyethylene.

4. The slipsheet of claim 1 , wherein the upper layer of material is linear low density polyethylene and the lower layer of material is high density polyethylene, and wherein the sheet of material is less than or equal to about five millimeters thick between the top surface and the bottom surface.

5. The slipsheet of claim 4 , wherein the top surface of the upper layer is relatively smooth in comparison to the bottom surface of the lower layer of material, and wherein the sheet of material can be made by co-extruding two different thermoplastic materials to form a web and passing the web through rollers.

6. The slipsheet of claim 1 , wherein the grid of ridges form a pattern of diamond shapes such that essentially each indentation is surrounded by four ridge lines that together form a diamond shape, and wherein the sheet of material can be made by co-extruding two different thermoplastic materials to form a web and passing the web through rollers.

7. A slipsheet or divider sheet, comprising:

a sheet of material for use with a forklift vehicle equipped with a push-pull device and a platen for supporting a load of goods on the sheet of material, wherein the sheet of material has opposing sides one and two,

side one having an imprinted surface, the imprinted surface comprising a raised surface and a recessed surface, wherein the raised surface lies substantially in a plane and comprises an interconnected grid of ridges, wherein the interconnected grid of ridges provides an outermost contact surface; and

side two having a surface that is not imprinted, the surface of side two being relatively smooth in comparison with the imprinted surface of side one,

wherein the sheet of material has an edge and a tab along the edge for the push-pull device to grip as the platen slides under the sheet of material,

wherein the material is thermoplastic, wherein the ridges form cells, and wherein the recessed surface comprises a plurality of indentations with essentially one indentation within each cell, each indentation including a bottom-most surface and a side wall extending between the bottom-most surface and ridges that form a cell wall that surrounds the indentation.

8. A slipsheet or divider sheet, comprising:

a sheet of material for use with a forklift vehicle equipped with a push-pull device and a platen for supporting a load of goods on the sheet of material, wherein the sheet of material has opposing sides one and two,

side one having an imprinted surface, the imprinted surface comprising a raised surface and a recessed surface, wherein the raised surface lies substantially in a plane and comprises an interconnected grid of ridges, wherein the interconnected grid of ridges provides an outermost contact surface; and

side two having a surface that is not imprinted, the surface of side two being relatively smooth in comparison with the imprinted surface of side one,

wherein the sheet of material has an edge and a tab along the edge for the push-pull device to grip as the platen slides under the sheet of material,

wherein the ridges comprise two sets of essentially parallel lines, wherein the lines intersect to form a pattern of diamond shapes, and

wherein the recessed surface comprises a set of discrete oval shapes.

9. A slipsheet or divider sheet, comprising:

a sheet of material for use with a forklift vehicle equipped with a push-pull device and a platen for supporting a load of goods on the sheet of material, wherein the sheet of material has opposing sides one and two,

side one having an imprinted surface, the imprinted surface comprising a raised surface and a recessed surface, wherein the raised surface lies substantially in a plane and comprises an interconnected grid of ridges, wherein the interconnected grid of ridges provides an outermost contact surface; and

side two having a surface that is not imprinted, the surface of side two being relatively smooth in comparison with the imprinted surface of side one,

wherein the sheet of material has an edge and a tab along the edge for the push-pull device to grip as the platen slides under the sheet of material,

wherein the recessed surface comprises a plurality of indentations that each have an oval shape, wherein the plurality of ridges comprise a grid of criss-crossed lines that form a pattern of diamond shapes, and wherein essentially each indentation lies within four ridges that form the shape of a diamond.

10. A slipsheet or divider sheet, comprising:

a sheet of material for use with a forklift vehicle equipped with a push-pull device and a platen for supporting a load of goods on the sheet of material, wherein the sheet of material has opposing sides one and two,

side one having an imprinted surface, the imprinted surface comprising a raised surface and a recessed surface, wherein the raised surface lies substantially in a plane and comprises an interconnected grid of ridges, wherein the interconnected grid of ridges provides an outermost contact surface; and

side two having a surface that is not imprinted, the surface of side two being relatively smooth in comparison with the imprinted surface of side one,

wherein the sheet of material has an edge and a tab along the edge for the push-pull device to grip as the platen slides under the sheet of material, and
