Abstract

A battery charger with a discrete switched regulator provides relatively high efficiency and relatively low cost. Unlike known battery chargers which incorporate switched regulator ICs, the battery charger in accordance with the present invention utilizes the microprocessor for a dual function. In particular, the microprocessor not only controls the charging characteristics of the battery charging circuit but also directly controls the power output of the battery charger by direct control of the discrete switched regulator circuit. By using a discrete switched regulator circuit and redefining the role of the microprocessor, the battery charger in accordance with the present invention is relatively less expensive than known battery chargers which incorporate switched regulator ICs.

Claims (16)

1. A battery charger comprising:

a regulator for receiving an input voltage and supplying a regulated supply of DC voltage at its output, said regulator configured to selectively connect said input voltage to at least one battery terminal under the control of a pulse width modulated (PWM) drive signal;

at least one charging circuit for charging a battery cell, said at least one charging circuit electrically coupled to said regulator, said at least one charging circuit comprising;

at least one pair of battery terminals adapted to be coupled to a battery cell;

at least one switching device serially coupled to said at least one pair of battery terminals for selectively connecting and disconnecting said pair of terminals from said charging circuit forming a charging circuit; and

a microprocessor operatively coupled to said at least one pair of battery terminals for monitoring one or more characteristics of said battery cell under charge and selectively controlling the switching device as a function of one or more charge termination functions, said microprocessor also configured to generate a PWM drive signal for controlling said regulator as a function of said one or more characteristics of said battery cell and selectively causing said input voltage to be connected to said at least one battery terminal.

2. The battery charger as recited in claim 1 , wherein said regulator includes a pulse width modulated (PWM) output.

3. The battery charger as recited in claim 2 , wherein said charging circuit includes a charging current resistor serially coupled to said at least one pair of battery terminals.

4. The battery charger as recited in claim 3 , wherein said one or mere characteristics include the charging current sensed by said charging current resistor which forms a closed feedback loop with said regulator in order to control said PWM output as a function of said charging current.

5. The battery charger as recited in claim 1 , wherein said charging circuit is configured to enable said microprocessor to sense the voltage across said at least one pair of terminals.

6. The battery charger as recited in claims 1 , wherein said regulator includes a primary driver circuit for controlling a primary switch and a secondary driver circuit for controlling a secondary switch, and a choke.

The battery charger as recited in claim 6 , wherein said microprocessor is configured to generate a first waveform for selectively closing said primary switch to initially supply charging current to the battery cell under charge and charge said choke and subsequently opening said primary switch.

The battery charger as recited in claim 7 , further including a freewheeling diode and wherein said microprocessor is configured to generate a second waveform for selectively controlling said secondary switch to provide a closed current path through said freewheeling diode, said choke and said secondary switch in order to prevent sudden interruption of said charging current to said choke when said primary switch is opened.

9. The battery charger as recited in claim 8 , wherein said microprocessor is configured to generate one or both of said first waveform and said second waveform as pulses with variable pulse widths.

10. The battery charger as recited in claim 9 , wherein said microprocessor varies one or both of said pulse widths as a function of the charging current to the battery cell under charge.

11. The battery charger as recital in claim 1 , wherein said regulator is formed from a plurality of discrete components.
