Abstract

A spinal implant system is provided for correcting spinal abnormalities. The system involves connectors configured to fit over spinal implant rods, a transverse rod, and a locking member for fixing each connector to the spinal implant rod and transverse rod. The connector is configured such that when the locking member is in a first position, the transverse rod is temporarily fixed to the connector, and when the locking member is in a second position, both the transverse rod and spinal implant rod are fixed to the connector.

a transverse rod positioned in the first bore of the connector; and

an adjustable locking member positioned in the second bore of the connector.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the open ended channel comprises a radius corresponding to the diameter of a spinal rod.

3. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the channel is positioned at an angle relative to the first bore.

4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable locking member comprises a set screw.

5. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the set screw is partially withdrawn from the connector and in contact with the transverse rod thereby fixing the transverse rod relative to the connector.

6. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein a spinal rod is positioned in the channel of the connector and the set screw is in contact with the spinal rod and the spinal rod is in contact with the transverse rod at the intersection region between the first bore and the channel of the connector thereby fixing the transverse rod and spinal rod relative to the connector.

7. The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a second connector.

8. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the second connector comprises an open ended channel extending through the second connector, a first bore having a central axis and extending through the second connector from a first outside surface of the second connector to a second outside surface of the second connector, at least a portion of the first bore intersecting the channel at an intersection region, a second bore having a central axis and extending through the second connector from the first outside surface of the second connector to an inside surface of the channel, the central axis of the first bore and the central axis of the second bore defining an oblique angle wherein an imaginary extension of the first bore away from the first outside surface of the second connector and an imaginary extension of the second bore away from the first outside surface of the second connector at least partially intersect, and an adjustable locking member positioned in the second bore of the second connector.

9. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein the transverse rod is positioned in the first bore of the second connector.

10. The assembly of claim 9 , wherein the adjustable locking member of the second connector comprises a set screw.

11. The assembly of claim 10 , wherein the set screw of the second connector is partially withdrawn from the second connector and in contact with the transverse rod thereby fixing the transverse rod relative to the second connector.

12. The assembly of claim 10 , wherein a spinal rod is positioned in the channel of the second connector and the set screw of the second connector is in contact with the spinal rod and the spinal rod is in contact with the transverse rod at the intersection region between the first bore of the second connector and the channel of the second connector thereby fixing the transverse rod and spinal rod relative to the second connector.

13. A spinal stabilization assembly comprising:

a connector having a channel extending through the connector, the connector further comprising:

a first bore having a central axis and extending through the connector from a first outside surface of the connector to a second outside surface of the connector, at least a portion of the first bore intersecting the channel at an intersection region;

a second bore having a central axis and extending through the connector from the first outside surface of the connector to an inside surface of the channel, the central axis of the first bore and the central axis of the second bore defining an oblique angle wherein an imaginary extension of the first bore in a direction away from the first outside surface of the connector and away from the channel and an imaginary extension of the second bore in a direction away from the first outside surface of the connector and away from the channel at least partially intersect;

a transverse rod positioned in the first bore of the connector; and

an adjustable locking member positioned in the second bore of the connector.

14. The assembly of claim 13 , wherein the adjustable locking member comprises a set screw.

15. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the set screw is partially withdrawn from the connector and in contact with the transverse rod thereby fixing the transverse rod relative to the connector.

16. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein a spinal rod is positioned in the channel of the connector and the set screw is in contact with the spinal rod and the spinal rod is in contact with the transverse rod at the intersection region between the first bore and the channel of the connector thereby fixing the transverse rod and spinal rod relative to the connector.

17. The assembly of claim 13 , further comprising a second connector.

18. The assembly of claim 17 , wherein the second connector comprises an open ended channel extending through the second connector, a first bore having a central axis and extending through the second connector from a first outside surface of the second connector to a second outside surface of the second connector, at least a portion of the first bore intersecting the channel at an intersection region, a second bore having a central axis and extending through the second connector from the first outside surface of the second connector to an inside surface of the channel, the central axis of the first bore and the central axis of the second bore defining an oblique angle wherein an imaginary extension of the first bore away from the first outside surface of the second connector and an imaginary extension of the second bore away from the first outside surface of the second connector at least partially intersect, and an adjustable locking member positioned in the second bore of the second connector.
