Abstract

A golf ball comprising a core and a cover layer, wherein the cover layer provides one or more deep dimples having two or more different radii is disclosed. The deep dimples(s) extend(s) through the cover layer to and/or into a layer or component underneath. The cover may be a single layer or it may include multiple layers. The deep dual dimples may be spherical or non-spherical, and the portion of the dimple that extends to or into the next inner layer may be the same or different shape as the outer portion of the dimple.

Claims (23)

1. A golf ball comprising:

a core composed of a first material; and

a cover layer disposed on the core, the cover layer composed of a second material, the cover layer having a plurality of apertures extending through the cover layer, each of the plurality of apertures having a first region and a second region, the first region having a first radius of curvature, R 1 , ranging from 0.130 inch to 0.190 inch, a first diameter, D 1 , ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.250 inch, and a depth, H 1 , ranging from 0.005 inch to 0.135 inch, the second region having a second radius of curvature, R 2 , ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.075 inch, a second diameter, D 2 , ranging from 0.020 inch to 0.160 inch, and a depth, H 2 , ranging from 0.005 inch to 0.135 inch; and

a filler disposed in the second region of each of the plurality of apertures, the filler composed of a third material which is different from the first material and the second material, the third material having a color that is different than the first material and the second material.

2. The golf ball according to claim 1 wherein the cover layer is composed of a polyurethane material.

3. The golf ball according to claim 1 wherein the cover layer has a thickness ranging from 0.001 inch to 0.100 inch.

4. The golf ball according to claim 1 wherein the cover layer is composed of a reaction-injection molded polyurethane material.

5. The golf ball according to claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of apertures extend into the core.

6. A golf ball comprising:

a core composed of a first material;

a mantle layer disposed on the core, the mantle layer composed of a second material different than the first material;

a cover layer disposed on the mantle layer, the cover layer composed of a third material, the cover layer having a plurality of apertures extending through the cover layer, each of the plurality of apertures having a first region and a second region, the first region having a first radius of curvature, R 1 , ranging from 0.130 inch to 0.190 inch, a first diameter, D 1 , ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.250 inch, and a depth, H 1 , ranging from 0.005 inch to 0.135 inch, the second region having a second radius of curvature, R 2 , ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.075 inch, a second diameter, D 2 , ranging from 0.020 inch to 0.160 inch, and a depth, H 2 , ranging from 0.005 inch to 0.135 inch; and

a filler disposed in the second region of each of the plurality of apertures, the filler composed of a fourth material which is different from the first material, the second material and the third material, the fourth material having a color that is different than the first material, the second material and the third material.

7. The golf ball according to claim 6 wherein the cover layer is composed of a polyurethane material.

8. The golf ball according to claim 6 wherein the cover layer has a thickness ranging from 0.001 inch to 0.100 inch.

9. The golf ball according to claim 6 wherein the cover layer is composed of a reaction-injection molded polyurethane material.

10. The golf ball according to claim 6 wherein the mantle layer is composed of a blend of ionomers.

11. The golf ball according to claim 6 wherein each of the plurality of apertures extend into the mantle layer.

12. A golf ball comprising:

a core composed of a polybutadiene material;

a mantle layer disposed on the core, the mantle layer composed of an ionomer material;

a cover layer disposed on the mantle layer, the cover layer composed of an reaction-injection molded polyurethane material, the cover layer having a plurality of apertures extending through the cover layer, each of the plurality of apertures having a first region and a second region, the first region having a first radius of curvature, R 1 , ranging from 0.130 inch to 0.190 inch, a first diameter, D 1 , ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.250 inch, and a depth, H 1 , ranging from 0.005 inch to 0.135 inch, the second region having a second radius of curvature, R 2 , ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.075 inch, a second diameter, D 2 , ranging from 0.020 inch to 0.160 inch, and a depth, H 2 , ranging from 0.005 inch to 0.135 inch; and

a filler disposed in the second region of each of the plurality of apertures, the filler composed of a material which is different from the cover layer material, the mantle layer material and the core material.
