Abstract

A method for reducing blood flow to an aneurysm proximate to a bifurcation having a source blood vessel a first branch vessel and a second branch vessel, the method comprising: providing a first mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material, the first mesh-like tube exhibiting a porosity index pre-selected to skew blood flow about the bifurcation away from the aneurysm; inserting the first mesh-like tube into the source blood vessel and the first branch vessel; and securing the first mesh-like tube to at least one of the source blood vessel and the first branch vessel, whereby blood flowing from the source blood vessel flows without undue impedance to the first branch vessel and the second branch vessel while being skewed away from the aneurysm.

Claims (41)

1. A method for reducing blood flow to an aneurysm proximate to a bifurcation having a source blood vessel a first branch vessel and a second branch vessel, the method comprising:

providing a first mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material, said first mesh-like tube exhibiting a porosity index pre-selected to skew blood flow about the bifurcation away from the aneurysm;

inserting said first mesh-like tube into the source blood vessel and the first branch vessel; and

securing said first mesh-like tube to at least one of said source blood vessel and said first branch vessel;

wherein said first mesh-like tube exhibits a porosity index of 60-75%,

whereby blood flowing from said source blood vessel flows without undue impedance to said first branch vessel and said second branch vessel while being skewed away from said aneurysm.

2. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising

providing a second mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material, said second mesh-like tube exhibiting a porosity index pre-selected to skew blood flow about the bifurcation away from the aneurysm; and

inserting said second mesh-like tube into the source blood vessel and the second branch vessel.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said first mesh-like tube includes windows having an inscribed diameter of 30-480 μm.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said first mesh-like tube includes windows having an inscribed diameter of 50-320 μm.

5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said first mesh-like tube is constituted of a plurality of filaments of bio-compatible material.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said first mesh-like tube is formed of 24-144 filaments of bio-compatible material.

7. A method for reducing blood flow to an aneurysm proximate to a bifurcation having a source blood vessel a first branch vessel and a second branch vessel, the method comprising:

providing a first mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material, said first mesh-like tube exhibiting a porosity index pre-selected to skew blood flow about the bifurcation away from the aneurysm;

inserting said first mesh-like tube into the source blood vessel and the first branch vessel; and

securing said first mesh-like tube to at least one of said source blood vessel and said first branch vessel;

wherein said first mesh-like tube is constituted of a plurality of filaments of bio-compatible material; and

wherein at least most of said plurality of filaments are of circular cross-section having a diameter of 10-60 μm;

whereby blood flowing from said source blood vessel flows without undue impedance to said first branch vessel and said second branch vessel while being skewed away from said aneurysm.

8. A method according to claim 7 , wherein at least most of said plurality of filaments are of circular cross-section having a diameter of 20-40 μm.

9. A method for reducing blood flow to an aneurysm proximate to a bifurcation having a source blood vessel a first branch vessel and a second branch vessel, the method comprising:

providing a first mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material, said first mesh-like tube exhibiting a porosity index pre-selected to skew blood flow about the bifurcation away from the aneurysm;

inserting said first mesh-like tube into the source blood vessel and the first branch vessel; and

securing said first mesh-like tube to at least one of said source blood vessel and said first branch vessel;

wherein said first mesh-like tube is constituted of a plurality of filaments of bio-compatible material; and,

wherein at least most of said plurality of filaments are of rectangular cross-section having a circumference of 40-180 μm;

whereby blood flowing from said source blood vessel flows without undue impedance to said first branch vessel and said second branch vessel while being skewed away from said aneurysm.

10. A method for reducing blood flow to an aneurysm proximate to a bifurcation having a source blood vessel a first branch vessel and a second branch vessel, the method comprising:

providing a first mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material, said first mesh-like tube exhibiting a porosity index pre-selected to skew blood flow about the bifurcation away from the aneurysm;

inserting said first mesh-like tube into the source blood vessel and the first branch vessel;

wherein said first mesh-like tube is constituted of a plurality of filaments of bio-compatible material; and

wherein said first mesh-like tube is formed of 62-120 filaments of bio-compatible material;

whereby blood flowing from said source blood vessel flows without undue impedance to said first branch vessel and said second branch vessel while being skewed away from said aneurysm.

11. A method according to claim 10 , wherein said first mesh-like tube exhibits a porosity index of 55-80%.

12. A method according to claim 11 , wherein said first mesh-like tube exhibits a porosity index of 60-75%.

13. A method for reducing blood flow to an aneurysm occupying the basal apex of a bifurcation having a source blood vessel a first branch vessel and a second branch vessel, the method comprising:

providing a mesh-like tube of bio-compatible material, said mesh-like tube exhibiting a porosity index of 60-75% to skew blood flow away from the basal apex aneurysm;

inserting said first mesh-like tube into the source blood vessel and the first branch vessel; and

securing said first mesh-like tube to at least one of said source blood vessel and said first branch vessel,

whereby blood flowing from said source blood vessel flows without undue impedance to said first branch vessel and said second branch vessel while being skewed away from said basal apex aneurysm.
