Abstract

A connector comprising a needless access device and a backflow check valve for transferring fluids and method therefor. The connector may have a first port, a second port, and a third port. A first valve element may be positioned within the first port and a second valve element may be positioned within the second port. The first valve element may be in a first position as a first fluid flows between the first and third ports. The second port may be used to introduce a second fluid into the connector. Upon introduction of the second fluid to the connector, the first valve element may move from the first position to a second position. In the second position, fluid may be prevented from flowing past the first valve element.

Claims (50)

1. A connector for transferring fluid comprising:

a housing having a first port, a second port, and a third port;

a first valve element positioned within the first port, the first valve element having a first position and a second position;

a second valve element positioned within the second port; and

a valve element support, the valve element support being positioned between the second port and the third port, wherein the second valve element rests against the valve element support;

wherein the first valve element is in the first position as fluid flows through the first port and moves to the second position in response to fluid being transferred into the second port, and

wherein a portion of the second valve element is flushed by the fluid flow through the first port.

2. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the first port comprises at least one bonding medium reservoir.

3. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the first port comprises a channel therethrough, the first valve element being located within the channel.

4. The connector of claim 3 , wherein the first valve element is connected to the channel by a connecting structure.

5. The connector of claim 4 , wherein the connecting structure is a hinge.

6. The connector of claim 4 , wherein the connecting structure comprises at least one support element and a connecting portion.

7. The connector of claim 6 , wherein the at least one support element is a prong.

8. The connector of claim 6 , wherein the first valve element is flexible.

9. The connector of claim 3 , wherein the first valve element is a disc.

10. The connector of claim 3 , wherein the first valve element comprises at least one protrusion.

11. The connector of claim 3 , wherein the first valve element has at least one opening therethrough.

12. The connector of claim 3 , further comprising:

a channel wall; and

at least one fluid channel located in the channel wall.

13. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the first port is operably connected to the second port.

14. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the first port is operably connected to the third port.

15. the connector of claim 1 , wherein the second valve element comprises a head portion, a body portion, a proximal end and a distal end.

16. The connector of claim 15 , wherein the second valve element has at least one opening therethrough such that fluid flows through the second valve element.

17. The connector of claim 15 , wherein the second valve element further comprises at least one undercut.

18. The connector of claim 15 , wherein the second valve element further comprises at least one notch.

19. The connector of claim 18 , wherein the at least one notch is a smile-cut.

20. The connector of claim 15 , further comprising a first enlarged portion at the proximal end of the second valve element.

21. The connector of claim 20 , further comprising a second enlarged portion between the first enlarged portion and the distal end of the second valve element.

22. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the second valve element comprises a head portion and a body portion.

23. The connector of claim 22 , wherein the body portion is a spring.

24. The connector of claim 22 , wherein a spring is positioned around the body portion.

25. The connector of claim 24 , the second valve element further comprising an enlarged portion, wherein the spring is positioned between the enlarged portion and the housing.

26. The connector of claim 22 , wherein the second valve element comprises a wall defining a first space, the space having air therein.

27. The connector of claim 26 , the housing further comprising at least one venting channel, such that air moves between a first position within the space and a second position outside of that space.

28. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises an antimicrobial component.

29. The connector of claim 1 , where in the first valve element comprises an antimicrobial component.

30. the connector of claim 1 , wherein the second valve element comprises an antimicrobial component.

31. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a fourth port having a third valve element, the third valve element having a first position and a second position, wherein the third valve element is in the first position as fluid flows through the fourth port and moves to the second position in response to fluid being transferred into the second port.

32. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises:

a fourth port having a third valve element; and

a fifth port connected to the fourth port;

wherein the third port is a connecting port, connecting the second port and the fourth port; and

wherein the first valve element is in the first position as fluid flows through the first port and moves to the second position in response to fluid being transferred into the fourth port.

33. A connector for transferring fluid comprising:

a housing having a first port, a second port, and a third port, wherein the first port comprises at least one bonding medium reservoir;

a first valve element positioned within the first port, the first valve element having a first position and a second position; and

a second valve element positioned within the second port;

wherein the first valve element is in the first position as fluid flows through the first port and moves to the second position in response to fluid being transferred into the second port, and

wherein a portion of the second valve element is flushed by the fluid flow through the first port.
