Abstract

Fibrous monolith processing techniques to fabricate multifunctional structures capable of performing more than one discrete function such as structures capable of bearing structural loads and mechanical stresses in service and also capable of performing at least one additional non-structural function.

Claims (29)

1. A combined conductive and insulative material comprising:

a fibrous monolithic structure that includes a plurality of fibers each comprising a core and a shell material,

wherein one of the materials comprises an electrically conductive material and the other material is an electrically insulating material.

2. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 1 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a ceramic composition.

3. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 1 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a metal composition.

4. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 1 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a ceramic-metallic composition.

5. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 1 wherein the electrically insulating material includes a ceramic composition.

6. A combined conductive and insulative material comprising:

a fibrous monolith composite structure including two or more fibers each comprising:

a first material including an electrically conductive material and forming a cell portion; and

a second material generally surrounding the first material and forming a boundary portion to separate the cell portion from other cell portions, the second material including an electrically insulating material.

7. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 6 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a ceramic composition.

8. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 6 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a metal composition.

9. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 6 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a ceramic-metallic composition.

10. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 6 wherein the electrically insulating material includes a ceramic composition.

11. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 6 wherein the second material includes a material selected from the group consisting of piezoelectric ceramics and electrostrictive ceramics and mixtures thereof.

12. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 6 wherein the first material is generally embedded within the structure and functions as one or more electrodes.

13. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 6 wherein the first material includes silver.

14. A combined conductive and insulative material comprising:

a sintered fibrous monolithic structure that includes two or more fibers, each fiber comprising a core material and a shell material generally surrounding the core material to provide a boundary between the core material and other core material,

wherein one of the core and shell materials comprises an electrically conductive material and the other material comprises an electrically insulating material,

and wherein the core material and the shell material are consolidated and densified by a sintering process.

15. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 14 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a ceramic composition.

16. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 14 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a metal composition.

17. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 14 wherein the electrically conductive material includes a ceramic-metallic composition.

18. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 14 wherein the electrically insulating material includes a ceramic composition.

19. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 14 wherein the shell material includes a material selected from the group consisting of piezoelectric ceramics and electrostrictive ceramics and mixtures thereof.

20. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 14 wherein the shell material is generally embedded within the structure and functions as one or more electrodes.

21. The combined conductive and insulative material of claim 14 wherein the core material includes silver.
