Abstract

Methods and apparatus fix relative rotation between an optical connector about an axis that runs longitudinally through the optical connector and an inspection machine. In one method, an optical connector is releasably secured to a cage member having an extending flange. The optical connector is mounted into an inspection machine by inserting the end surface of the connector into a connector receipt aperture of the machine, and orienting the optical connector with the cage member to position the extending flange within a void of a fixture on the machine. A kit including a cage member and a mounting plate are provided.

(c) mounting the optical connector with the cage member secured thereto into the inspection machine by:

(i) releasably engaging the extending flange of the cage member with the positioning structure of the fixture such that the optical connector is oriented in a fixed angular position, and inserting the end surface of the optical connector into the connector receipt aperture.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of releasably securing the optical connector to the cage member includes releasably securing the optical connector to the cage member wherein the extending flange of the cage member includes sides that define an aperture.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of releasably securing the optical connector to the cage member includes releasably securing the optical connector to the cage member wherein the sides that define the aperture of the cage member cooperate with the positioning structure of the fixture to orient the optical connector in the fixed angular position.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the step of providing the inspection machine includes providing the inspection machine wherein the positioning structure defines a first width, and the sides of the extending flange define a second width, the first and second widths cooperating to orient the optical connector in the fixed angular position.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of providing the inspection machine includes providing the inspection machine wherein the first width is no more than 0.25% larger than the second width.

6. The method of claim 1 , further including engaging a free end of the extending flange with the positioning structure of the fixture.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of releasably securing the optical connector to the cage member includes:

(a) inserting the optical connector into a receiving chamber defined by a frame of the cage member; and

(b) latching the cage member to the optical connector.

8. The method of to claim 1 , further including:

(a) after the step of mounting the optical connector into the inspection machine, unmounting the optical connector from the inspection machine by:

(i) removing the end surface of the optical connector from the connector receipt aperture; and

(ii) disengaging the extending flange of the cage member from the positioning structure; and

(b) after the step of unmounting the optical connector from the inspection machine, removing the cage member from the optical connector.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of providing the inspection machine having the connector receipt aperture and the fixture includes mounting the fixture onto the inspection machine.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of providing the inspection machine includes providing the inspection machine wherein the positioning structure includes a slot formed in an edge of the fixture.

11. A kit for use with an inspection machine for inspecting an end surface of an optical connector, the connector including a housing holding an optical ferrule with an optical fiber; the kit comprising:

(a) a plate having a generally planar construction, the plate being configured to mount on the inspection machine; the plate including positioning structure;

(b) a cage member independent of the plate constructed and arranged to receive the optical connector; the cage member including an extending flange sized to engage the positioning structure of the plate, wherein the extending flange of the cage member includes sides that define an aperture, the positioning structure of the plate defines a first width, and the sides of the extending flange define a second width, wherein the first width of the plate is sized to correspond to the second width of the extending flange, and the first width is no more than 0.25% of the second width.

12. The kit of claim 11 , wherein the extending flange includes sides terminating at a free end, the free end being sized to engage the positioning structure of the plate.

13. The kit of claim 11 , wherein the cage member includes a frame defining an optical connector receiving chamber, the extending flange being cantilevered from the frame.

14. The kit of claim 13 , wherein the cage member further includes a latch assembly, the latch assembly extending from the frame and positioned adjacent to the optical connector receiving chamber.

15. The kit of claim 11 , wherein the plate includes at least one aperture sized to receive a fastener for securing the plate to the inspection machine.

16. The kit of claim 11 , wherein the positioning structure includes a slot formed in an edge of the plate.

17. A method for inspecting an end surface of an optical connector, the optical connector including a housing holding an optical ferrule with an optical fiber, the method comprising:

(a) providing an inspection machine having a connector receipt aperture and a fixture that defines positioning structure;

(b) releasably securing the optical connector to a cage member, the cage member including an extending flange; and

(c) mounting the optical connector with the cage member secured thereto into the inspection machine by:

(i) engaging the extending flange of the cage member with the positioning structure of the fixture such that the optical connector is oriented in a fixed angular position, and inserting the end surface of the optical connector into the connector receipt aperture;

(d) after the step of mounting the optical connector into the inspection machine, unmounting the optical connector from the inspection machine by:

(i) removing the end surface of the optical connector from the connector receipt aperture; and

(ii) disengaging the extending flange of the cage member from the positioning structure; and
