Transmural ablation device with temperature sensor
View Patent ↗A method and apparatus for transmural ablation using an instrument containing first and second jaw member and at least one of the jaw members having an ablation member. A clamping force is exerted on the jaw members such that the tissue of the hollow organ is clamped therebetween. An ablation energy source is then applied thus ablating the tissue between the jaw members. A monitoring device measures a suitable parameter, such as impedance or temperature, and indicates when the tissue has been fully ablated.
1. A tissue clamping device comprising first and second jaws having a longitudinal length movable between an open position for receiving tissue therebetween and a clamping position for compressing the tissue therebetween, the jaws each having a clamping surface and an ablation member in face to face relation with the clamping surface and ablation member of the other jaw; each ablation member being connectible to an ablation energy source for providing ablation energy to a selected ablation area between the jaws; said device further comprising at least one temperature sensor carried by one of the jaws, spaced laterally from the respective ablation member and adapted to sense the temperature of tissue at a selected location which selected location is in the vicinity of the respective clamping surface so that in the clamping position the temperature sensor monitors the temperature of tissue at said selected location to detect undesired thermal spread in the compressed tissue that is located outside the selected ablation area.
2. The device of claim 1 wherein the ablation member is between approximately 3 to 8 cm in length and approximately 0.12 to 0.6 mm in width.
3. The device of claim 1 wherein the ablation member is electrically conductive.
4. The device of claim 1 wherein each ablation member is carried substantially centrally along the longitudinal length of its associated jaw.
5. The device of claim 1 wherein one temperature sensor is laterally spaced from each ablation member.
6. The device of claim 1 wherein said temperature sensor is disposed at a location on the respective jaw between an edge of such jaw and the respective ablation member.
7. The device of claim 1 wherein said temperature sensor is disposed proximal to the respective ablation member and is electrically isolated therefrom.
