Abstract

A targeted drug delivery device is provided. The device comprises an elongated member with proximal and distal ends, a plurality of infusion ports associated with the distal end of the elongated member, and a selector mechanism for selectively placing an introducer port into fluid communication with at least one infusion port. A method for treating tissue is also provided. The method comprises introducing a medical device into the tissue, selecting an region of the tissue to treat, positioning the medical device in proximity to the region, and introducing a medicament through the device to treat only that region.

Claims (27)

1. A medical device, comprising:

an elongated member having a proximal end and a distal end;

a plurality of infusion ports associated with the distal end of the member;

a plurality of fluid delivery channels in fluid communication with the respective infusion ports;

an introduction port configured to be in selective fluid communication with each of the plurality of fluid delivery channels; and

a selector mechanism configured for selectively placing the introduction port into fluid communication with a respective infusion port via a respective fluid delivery channel, the selector mechanism comprising:

a rotatable selector plate having at least one through-hole that can be selectively aligned with a proximal opening of a respective fluid delivery channel, and

a manifold positioned between the introducer port and the selector plate, the manifold having a cavity in fluid communication between the introduction port and the at least one selector plate hole.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the elongated member is axially rigid.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ports is formed in the distal end of the elongated member.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the elongated member comprises a bendable distal section, the device further comprising an actuator configured for bending the distal end of the elongated member into an arc.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the actuator comprises a tension cord attached to the distal end of the elongated member.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a radially expandable body surrounding the distal end of the member, wherein the plurality of ports is disposed on the radially expandable body.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the expandable body comprises a balloon, and the device further comprises an inflation duct extending along the member in fluid communication with the interior of the balloon.

8. The device of claim 6 , wherein the expandable body comprises a plurality of resilient arms that radially bend outward in the absence of a radially compressive force.

9. The device of claim 8 , further comprising a sheath axially slidable along the elongated member and configured for applying a radially compressive force to the plurality of arms.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the channels have proximal openings that terminate at the proximal end of the member.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the channels have distal openings that terminate at the distal end of the member.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal ends of the channels are axially disposed.

13. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a flush port in fluid communication with the manifold cavity.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein proximal ends of the channels are radially disposed, and the selector mechanism comprises a rod extending through the member and at least one annular arrangement having a gap that can be aligned with a proximal opening of a channel.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the annular arrangement comprises a plurality of radially extending, evenly distributed, stops, and the gap represents a missing stop.

16. The device of claim 14 , wherein the annular arrangement comprises a cam, and the gap is formed in the cam.

17. The device of claim 14 , further comprising an annular lumen formed between the rod and the member, wherein the annular lumen is in fluid communication between the introduction port and the channels.

18. The device of claim 1 , the selector mechanism placeable at a first position wherein the introduction port is in fluid communication with a first one of the infusion ports, and at a second position wherein the introduction port is in fluid communication with a second one of the infusion ports, wherein when the selector mechanism is at the first position, the introduction port is not in fluid communication with the second one of the infusion ports, and wherein when the selector mechanism is at the second position, the introduction port is not in fluid communication with the first one of the infusion ports.

19. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid source that is in fluid communication with the introduction port.

20. The device of claim 1 , the selector mechanism placeable at a first position wherein the introduction port is in fluid communication with a first one of the infusion ports, and at a second position wherein the introduction port is in fluid communication with a second one of the infusion ports, wherein when the selector mechanism is at the first position, the introduction port is in fluid communication with the first one of the infusion ports, and not in fluid communication with any remaining ones of the infusion ports.
