Abstract

The present invention relates to a thermophilic hydrophobin, TT1, or a protein or polypeptide substantially similar thereto, derived from the thermophilic fungus Talaromyces thermophilus . The invention further relates to a polynucleotide encoding such hydrophobin, as well as to materials coated with such hydrophobin.

Claims (18)

1. An isolated hydrophobin polypeptide, wherein the polypeptide has an amino acid sequence of at least 80% sequence identity, when compared to SEQ ID NO:1, is stable at 90° C., and wherein a surface coated with the polypeptide demonstrates a change in water contact angle of at least 20° as compared with the uncoated surface.

2. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide has at least 85% sequence identity, when compard to SEQ ID NO:1.

3. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide has at least 90% sequence identity, when compared to SEQ ID NO:1.

4. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide has at least 95% sequence identity, when compared to SEQ ID NO:1.

5. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide comprises SEQ ID NO:1.

6. A composite structure comprising a polymer material having a thermophilic hydrophobin coating thereon wherein the wettability of the polymer is altered by the thermophilic hydrophobin coating as characterized by a difference in water contact angle of at least 20°, and wherein the thermophilie hydrophobin coating comprises a hydrophobin polypetide having at least 80% amino acid sequence identity when compared to SEQ ID NO.1.

7. A composite structure according to claim 6 wherein the polymer material is selected from the group consisting of a fluoropolymer, a polyolefin, ethylene copolymer, a polyamide, a polyimide, and a polyester.

8. A composite structure according to claim 7 wherein the fluoropolymer is selected from the group consisting of Teflon®, Tedlar® and Nafion®.

9. A composite structure according to claim 7 wherein the polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of Tyvek®, Bynel®, Polypropylene PP6D81 resin and low density polyethylene DPE1645.

10. A composite structure according to claim 7 wherein the ethylene copolymer is Surlyn®.

11. A composite structure according to claim 7 wherein the polyester is selected from the group consisting of Mylar®, and Sorona®.

12. A composite structure according to claim 7 wherein the polyamide is selected from the group consisting of Kevlar® and Nomex®.

13. A composite structure according to claim 7 wherein the polyimide is Kapton®.

14. A composite structure of claim 6 wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide has at least 85% sequence identity, when compared to SEQ ID NO:1.

15. A composite structure of claim 6 wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide has at least 90% sequence identity, when compared to SEQ ID NO:1.

16. A composite structure of claim 6 wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide has at least 95% sequence identity, when compared SEQ ID NO:1.

17. A medical device comprising the composite of either of claim 6 .

18. An electronic device comprising the composite of either of claim 6 .
