Abstract

Apparatus for redirecting a plurality of optical beams emanating from a respective plurality of optical transmitters arranged in a pattern along a first dimension and a second dimension. The apparatus comprises a plurality of refractive regions. Each refractive region intercepts the optical beams emanating from an associated group of optical transmitters occupying a common position in the first dimension. In addition, each particular refractive region imparts to the intercepted optical beams an angular deflection in the first dimension, the angular deflection in the first dimension being a function of the common position in the first dimension occupied by the optical transmitters from which emanate the optical beams intercepted by the particular refractive region. Use of the refractive regions reduces the amount of available deflection area left unused when a parallel set of port cards is employed for switching optical signals.

Claims (17)

1. Apparatus for redirecting a plurality of optical beams emanating from a respective plurality of optical transmitters arranged in a pattern along a first dimension and a second dimension, comprising:

a plurality of first refractive regions;

each first refractive region intercepting the optical beams emanating from an associated group of optical transmitters occupying a common position in the first dimension;

each particular first refractive region having a fixed angular orientation with respect to each other first refractive region and imparting to the intercepted optical beams a fixed angular deflection in the first dimension, the fixed angular deflection in the first dimension being a function of the common position in the first dimension occupied by the optical transmitters from which emanate the optical beams intercepted by the particular first refractive region;

a plurality of second refractive regions;

each second refractive region intercepting the optical beams emanating from a second associated group of optical transmitters occupying a common position in the second dimension;

each particular second refractive region having a fixed angular orientation with respect to each other second refractive region and imparting to the intercepted optical beams a fixed angular deflection in the second dimension, the fixed angular deflection in the second dimension being a function of the common position in the second dimension occupied by the optical transmitters from which emanate the optical beams intercepted by the particular second refractive region;

the apparatus being implemented as an integral formation having a front face and a back face, wherein the first refractive regions appear on one of the front and back face and wherein the second refractive regions appear on the other of the front and back face.

2. Apparatus defined in claim 1 , the fixed angular deflection in the first dimension further being a function of the angle at which the optical beams arrive at the apparatus.

3. Apparatus defined in claim 1 , the fixed angular deflection in the second dimension further being a function of the angle at which the optical beams arrive at the apparatus.

4. Apparatus defined in claim 3 , the first refractive regions being integrally formed into a first integral component, the second refractive regions being integrally formed into a second integral component, the first and second integral components being placed in series with one another.

5. Apparatus defined in claim 4 , each of the first refractive regions defining a respective strip along a surface of the first integral component.

6. Apparatus defined in claim 5 , each of the second refractive regions defining a respective strip along a surface of the second integral component.

7. Apparatus defined in claim 1 ,

each first refractive region comprising a plurality of refractive sub-regions;

different refractive sub-regions of the same first refractive region intercepting respective optical beams emanating from optical transmitters occupying different respective positions in the second dimension;

each refractive sub-region of a particular first refractive region imparting to the respective intercepted optical beam a displacement in the second dimension, the displacement in the second dimension being a function of the position in the second dimension occupied by the respective intercepted optical beam.
