Abstract

Composite electrode/current collectors for capacitors, e.g., a flow-through capacitor or electric double layer capacitor are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for making a composite electrode/current collectors and capacitors having at least one composite electrode/current collector.

Claims (24)

1. A capacitor comprising

a. a separator;

b. at least one pair of opposed retaining plates; and

c. at least one composite electrode/current collector disposed between the separator and one of the opposed retaining plates, wherein the composite electrode/current collector comprises a a sheet of exfoliated graphite and electrode material formed into a single element and further wherein the sheet of exfoliated graphite has an area weight of at least about 7.5 mg/cm 2 .

2. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein said electrode material comprises activated carbon having a BET surface area of at least about 200 m 2 /g.

3. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein said compressed mass comprises up to about 100 μm thick layer of exfoliated graphite.

4. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein said capacitor substantially devoid of an aluminum element capable of conducting electricity.

5. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein the BET surface area of said activated carbon is at least about 1000 m 2 /g.

6. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein said electrode material further comprises a polymeric binder substantially non-reactive with an electrolyte of said capacitor.

7. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein said electrode material further comprises a conductive additive.

8. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein said the composite electrode/current collector comprises at least about 5% by weight of said exfoliated graphite.

9. The capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein said capacitor is substantially devoid of an aluminum element having a thickness of more than about 15 μm.

10. A capacitor comprising

a. a separator;

b. at least one pair of opposed retaining plates; and

c. at least one composite electrode/current collector disposed between the separator and one of the opposed retaining plates, wherein the composite electrode/current collector comprises a compressed mass of exfoliated graphite and electrode material formed into a single element and further wherein said the composite electrode/current collector comprises at least about 5% by weight of said exfoliated graphite.

11. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein said electrode material comprises activated carbon having a BET surface area of at least about 200 m 2 /g.

12. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein said compressed mass comprises up to about 100 μm thick layer of exfoliated graphite.

13. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein said compressed mass comprises a sheet of exfoliated graphite having an area weight of at least about 7.5 mg/cm 2 .

14. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein said capacitor substantially devoid of an aluminum element capable of conducting electricity.

15. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein the BET surface area of said activated carbon is at least about 1000 m 2 /g.

16. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein said electrode material further comprises a polymeric binder substantially non-reactive with an electrolyte of said capacitor.

17. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein said electrode material further comprises a conductive additive.

18. The capacitor according to claim 10 , wherein said capacitor is substantially devoid of an aluminum element having a thickness of more than about 15 μm.
