Abstract

A metallocene catalyst may be temporarily and reversibly passivated by contact with an effective amount of an unsaturated hydrocarbon passivating compound.

Claims (28)

1. A process for polymerization of C 2 –C 14 olefins comprising:

(a) feeding a complex of metallocene olefin polymerization catalyst and a co-catalyst, which complex has been passivated by contact with an unsaturated hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of C 4 –C 14 alkynes, C 4 –C 14 allenes and polycyclic alkenes having an unreactive beta hydrogen, and at least one C 2 –C 14 olefin monomer to a polymerization reactor;

b) dispersing the passivated metallocene catalyst complex in a polymerization medium contained therein;

c) reactivating the passivated metallocene complex catalyst; and

d) polymerizing the olefin monomer.

2. The process of claim 1 wherein the passivated catalyst is reactivated thermally.

3. The process of claim 1 wherein the passivated catalyst is reactivated by contact with an activator selected from hydrogen and metal alkyls.

4. The process of claim 1 wherein the metallocene catalyst comprises a Group 4 or 5 metallocene.

5. The process of claim 1 wherein the metallocene catalyst comprises zirconium or hafnium metallocene.

6. The process of claim 1 wherein the metallocene catalyst comprises a zirconium metallocene.

7. The process of claim 1 wherein the metallocene catalyst is supported on a suitable carrier.

8. The process of claim 1 wherein the unsaturated hydrocarbon is present from about 1 to about 5 equivalents, per equivalent of metallocene metal.

9. The process of claim 1 wherein the unsaturated hydrocarbon is present from about 1 to about 5 equivalents, per equivalent of zirconium.

10. The process of claim 1 wherein the co-catalyst is an aluminoxane.

11. The process of claim 1 wherein the olefin monomer comprises propylene, ethylene, or a mixture of propylene and ethylene.

12. The process of claim 1 wherein the olefin monomer comprises propylene.

13. A process for polymerization of C 2 –C 14 olefins comprising:

a) feeding a complex of Group 4 metallocene olefin polymerization catalyst and an aluminoxane co-catalyst, which complex has been passivated by contact with an unsaturated hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of C 4 –C 14 alkynes, C 4 –C 14 allenes and polycyclic alkenes having an unreactive beta hydrogen, and at least one C 2 –C 14 olefin monomer to a polymerization reactor;

b) dispersing the passivated metallocene catalyst complex in a polymerization medium contained therein;

c) reactivating the passivated metallocene catalyst complex by holding the polymerization medium at an elevated temperature sufficient to reactivate said catalyst; and

d) polymerizing the olefin monomer.

14. The process of claim 13 wherein the metallocene catalyst comprises a zirconium metallocene.

15. The process of claim 13 wherein the metallocene catalyst is supported on a suitable carrier.

16. The process of claim 15 wherein the metallocene catalyst comprises a zirconium metallocene.

17. The process of claim 13 wherein the olefin monomer comprises propylene, ethylene, or a mixture of propylene and ethylene.

18. The process of claim 13 wherein the olefin monomer comprises propylene.

19. The process of claim 16 wherein the olefin monomer comprises propylene, ethylene, or a mixture of propylene and ethylene.

20. The process of claim 16 wherein the olefin monomer comprises propylene.
