Abstract

The present invention broadly comprises a multiport filter having at least three intake ports and at least two layers—a first layer for containing particles 3 microns or greater and a second layer that contains particles 3 microns or less in size. In alternate embodiments, the filter includes a third layer for trapping odors and gases and a fourth layer for trapping fines. The second layer may be comprised of ULPA material and may have antimicrobial material. The invention also includes a contaminant removal system for the filtering and recirculation of air contaminated with smoke from cautery-type surgical procedures. The invention also broadly comprises a surgical assemblies control service head designed to house powered surgical devices and a vacuum-filtering system for the treatment of air contamination caused by surgical procedures.

Claims (28)

1. A system for evacuating suspended particles from a fluid stream comprising:

(a) a service head having a housing adapted for mounting within an enclosure such that said service head is suspended off the floor of said enclosure, said housing having a plurality of housing surfaces;

(b) a housing surface defining a surgical assembly cavity adapted to receive an electrically-powered surgical assembly;

(c) said housing surface further defining a surgical gas cavity adapted to receive a surgical gas module for controlling the flow of surgical gas;

(d) a filter mounted within said housing, said filter having an intake port adapted to receive an intake device;

(e) an electrically-powered surgical assembly in said surgical assembly cavity; and

(f) a surgical gas module in said surgical gas cavity.

2. The service head of claim 1 wherein said surgical assembly is an ultrasonic surgical device, electrocautery device, insufflator, laser surgical instrument, camera, surgical light source or endoscopic device.

3. The service head of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical outlet mounted in said housing for delivering electricity to a surgical assembly.

4. The service head of claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum source operatively connected to said filter, which vacuum source is mounted in said housing.

5. The service head of claim 4 , further comprising a remote control device in operative communication with said vacuum source.

6. A service head for use in connection with a medical procedure in an enclosure, comprising:

(a) a housing adapted for mounting within an enclosure such that said housing is suspended off the floor of said enclosure, said housing having a plurality of housing surfaces;

(b) a housing surface defining a plurality of surgical assembly openings adapted to receive a plurality of controls for surgical assemblies;

(c) a plurality of removable panels corresponding to said plurality of surgical assembly openings;

(d) said housing surface further defining a surgical gas opening adapted to receive a surgical gas module for controlling the flow of surgical gas;

(e) a removable panel corresponding to said surgical gas opening;

(f) said housing surface further defining a filter opening adapted to receive a filter for filtering contaminated air or liquid;

(g) at least one control for a surgical assembly in a corresponding surgical assembly opening;

(h) a surgical gas module in said surgical gas opening; and

(i) a filter in said filter opening.

7. The service head of claim 6 wherein said control for a surgical assembly is a control for an ultrasonic surgical device, electrocautery device, insufflator, laser surgical instrument, camera, surgical light source or endoscopic device.

8. The service head of claim 6 , further comprising an electrical outlet mounted in said housing for delivering electricity to a surgical assembly.

9. The service head of claim 6 , further comprising a vacuum source operatively connected to said filter, which vacuum source is mounted in said housing.

10. The service head of claim 9 , further comprising a remote control device in operative communication with said vacuum source.

11. The service head of claim 6 wherein said surgical gas module comprises a gas outlet configured to receive a conductor to deliver gas to a surgical assembly.

12. The service head of claim 6 , further comprising a surgical assembly in one of said surgical assembly openings.

13. The service head of claim 12 wherein said surgical assembly is an ultrasonic surgical device, electrocautery device, insufflator, laser surgical instrument, camera, surgical light source or endoscopic device.
