Abstract

A medical device and methods for filling tissue are disclosed. The device has a first configuration wherein the device can pass through a small catheter or needle placed in the tissue to be filled and a second configuration in which the device is expanded within the tissue to be filled. The exterior profile of the expanded device may be customized along its length, to achieve a desired cosmetic or therapeutic result. In one embodiment, the device comprises an outer sleeve for containing filler and a valve on the sleeve for retaining the filler therein. The device is adapted to be placed through a needle in the skin to reduce facial wrinkles or augment facial features such as the lips.

Claims (20)

1 . A method of making an implantable tissue bulking device, comprising the steps of:

providing a flexible tubular body, having a proximal end, a distal end, and a central lumen;

positioning a closing element on the proximal end of the tubular body; and

everting the tubular body to position the closing element within the central lumen.

2 . A method as in claim 1 , wherein the closing element comprises one or more elastomeric bands.

3 . A method as in claim 1 , wherein the closing element comprises a suture.

4 . A method as in claim 1 , wherein the closing element comprises a clip.

5 . A method as in claim 1 , further comprising the step of tying a suture around the distal end of the tubular body.

6 . A method as in claim 1 , further comprising the step of positioning a guide wire through the proximal end and into the central lumen.

7 . An implantable tissue augmentation device, comprising:

an elongate, flexible tubular body, having a proximal end, a distal end and a central lumen;

a valved opening on the proximal end; and

a closed distal end.

8 . An implantable tissue augmentation device as in claim 7 , further comprising a guidewire extending through the valved opening.

9 . An implantable tissue augmentation device as in claim 7 , wherein the valve comprises a closing element surrounding a portion of the tubular body.

10 . An implantable tissue augmentation device as in claim 9 , wherein the tubular body has been everted to position the closing element within the central lumen.

11 . An implantable tissue augmentation device as in claim 9 , wherein the closing element comprises a suture loop.

12 . An implantable tissue augmentation device as in claim 9 , wherein the closing element comprises an elastic loop.

13 . An implantable tissue augmentation device as in claim 9 , wherein the closing element comprises a metal loop.

14 . An implantable tissue augmentation device as in claim 7 , further comprising a distal suture, attached to the distal end of the tubular body.
