Abstract

A compression device for a mammography unit includes a compression plate positionable in an x-ray field of the mammography unit, and a radiolucent foam pad removably attached to the compression plate that includes an impermeable exposed surface for contacting tissue disposed on the pad within the x-ray field. The pad includes an adhesive layer on the first surface, or a hook and eye fastener for removably attaching the pad to the compression plate. The pad is attached to the compression plate in the x-ray field of the mammography unit, a breast is compressed using the compression plate, a mammogram of the compressed breast is obtained, the pad producing no significant visual artifact on the mammogram, and thereafter the pad is removed.

Claims (50)

1. A mammography unit comprising:

a mammography unit cassette holder which comprises an imaging area; a first side surface substantially perpendicular to said imaging area comprising a first tunnel opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough; a second side surface opposite said first side surface comprising a second tunnel opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough; and an outer surface substantially perpendicular to said imaging area, said first side surface, and said second side surface;

wherein said imaging area comprises a first compressible material wherein said material is x-ray transparent; and

an x-ray source, a compression device, and a support member to which said mammography unit cassette holder is attached.

2. A mammography unit, comprising:

a mammography unit cassette holder comprising patient contact surfaces comprising an imaging area, a side surface comprising a first opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough, and a second side opposite the first side opening, the second side opening comprising a second opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough;

a first compressible material wherein said material is x-ray transparent integral to the patient contact surfaces; and

an x-ray source, a compression device, and a support member to which the mammography unit cassette holder is attached.

3. The mammography unit of claim 2 , wherein said material further comprises non-porous material.

4. The mammography unit of claim 2 , wherein the patient contact surfaces further comprise an outer surface.

5. The mammography unit of claim 2 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material comprises a pad and an impermeable membrane covering the pad.

6. The mammography unit of claim 2 , wherein the support member comprises a base, and wherein the compression device is also attached to the base.

7. The mammography unit of claim 6 , wherein the compression device is removably attached to a movable working arm on the base.

8. A mammography unit, comprising:

a mammography unit cassette holder comprising patient contact surfaces comprising an imaging area, the mammography unit cassette holder further comprising a first opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough;

a first compressible material wherein said material is x-ray transparent on the patient contact surfaces;

an x-ray source; and

a compression device.

9. The mammography unit of claim 8 , wherein the patient contact surfaces comprise a functional surface in an x-ray field of the x-ray source and a front surface.

10. The mammography unit of claim 8 , wherein the patient contact surfaces further comprise an outer surface.

11. The mammography unit of claim 8 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material is removably installed on the patient contact surfaces.

12. The mammography unit of claim 8 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material is integral to the patient contact surfaces.

13. The mammography unit of claim 8 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material comprises a pad.

14. The mammography unit of claim 13 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material further comprises an impermeable membrane covering the pad.

15. The mammography unit of claim 8 , further comprising a support member to which the mammography unit cassette holder is attached.

16. The mammography unit of claim 8 , the mammography unit cassette holder further comprising a first side surface having the first opening therein.

17. The mammography unit of claim 16 , the mammography unit cassette holder further comprising a second side surface opposite the first side surface, the second side surface having a second opening adapted to permit an x-ray cassette to pass therethrough.

18. A mammography unit, comprising:

a mammography unit cassette holder comprising patient contact surfaces comprising an imaging area, and a first tunnel opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough;

a first compressible material wherein said material is x-ray transparent integral to the patient contact surfaces; and

an x-ray source, and a compression device.

19. The mammography unit of claim 18 , further comprising a support member to which the mammography unit cassette holder is attached.

20. The mammography unit of claim 19 , wherein the support member comprises a base, and wherein the compression device is also attached to the base.

21. The mammography unit of claim 20 , wherein the compression device is removably attached to a movable working arm on the base.

22. A mammography unit cassette holder, comprising:

an imaging area, a first side surface comprising a first tunnel opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough, a second side surface opposite the first side surface, and an outer surface;

a support member for attaching the cassette holder to a mammography unit; and

a compressible x-ray transparent material on the imaging area and the outer surface.

23. The mammography unit of claim 22 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material is removably installed on the imaging area and the outer surface.

24. The mammography unit of claim 22 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material is integral to the imaging area and the outer surface.

25. The mammography unit of claim 22 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material comprises a pad.

26. The mammography unit of claim 25 , wherein the compressible x-ray transparent material further comprises an impermeable membrane covering the pad.

27. An apparatus for a mammography unit, comprising:

an x-ray cassette holder comprising an imaging area, a first side surface comprising a first tunnel opening adapted to permit a mammography unit cassette to pass therethrough, a second side surface opposite the first side surface, and an outer surface; and
