Abstract

A wireless transmitter configured to encode data to be transmitted to a wireless receiver into frames comprising a frame structure. The frame structure comprises a synchronization packet that can be used by the receiver to synchronize with the wireless transmitter followed by data packets interspersed with preamble packets that can be used to re-synchronize the wireless receiver with the wireless transmitter, the length of the data packets selected to ensure that drift in the wireless receiver will be minimal before re-synchronization due to the preamble packets.

Claims (34)

. A wireless transmitter configured to encode data to be transmitted to a wireless receiver into frames comprising a frame structure, the frame structure comprising:

a synchronization packet that can be used by the receiver to synchronize with the wireless transmitter;

followed by data packets interspersed with preamble packets that can be used to re-synchronize the wireless receiver with the wireless transmitter, the length of the data packets selected to ensure that drift in the wireless receiver will be minimal before re-synchronization due to the preamble packets.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 1 , wherein the synchronization packets comprises a code.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 2 , wherein the preamble packets also comprise a code.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 3 , wherein the synchronization and preamble packets comprise the same code.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 4 , wherein the code is a perfect sequence.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 2 , wherein the synchronization packet comprises multiple copies of the code.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 6 , wherein the synchronization packet further comprises an inverse of the code following the multiple copies of the code.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 1 , wherein the length of the data packets is a fraction of the overall frame period.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 8 , wherein the length of the data packets is ⅕th the overall frame period.

. The wireless transmitter of claim 8 , wherein the length of the data packets is ⅛th the overall frame period.

. A wireless receiver configured to receive from a wireless transmitter data encoded into frames comprising a frame structure, the frame structure comprising:

a synchronization packet that can be used by the receiver to synchronize with the wireless transmitter;

followed by data packets interspersed with preamble packets that can be used to re-synchronize the wireless receiver with the wireless transmitter, the length of the data packets selected to ensure that drift in the wireless receiver will be minimal before re-synchronization due to the preamble packets.

. The wireless receiver of claim 11 , comprising a correlate configured to correlate the synchronization packet and provide peak information that can be used by the wireless receiver to synchronize with the wireless transmitter.

. The wireless receiver of claim 12 , wherein the correlator is further configured to correlate the preamble packets and provide peak information that can be used by the wireless receiver to re-synchronize with the wireless transmitter.

. The wireless receiver of claim 12 , further comprising a plurality of correlators each configured to correlate the synchronization packet and provide peak information that can be used by the wireless receiver to synchronize with the wireless transmitter.

. The wireless receiver of claim 14 , further comprising a combiner coupled with the plurality of correlators, the combiner configured to combine the output of the correlators.

. The wireless receiver of claim 14 , wherein the correlators define a correlation window that helps ensure that the wireless receiver can synchronize with the wireless transmitter even in a multipath environment.

. The wireless receiver of claim 16 , wherein the correlation window is longer than the delay spread of the multipath environment.

. The wireless receiver of claim 17 , wherein the correlation window is twice the length of the delay spread.

. The wireless receiver of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of correlators can be used by the wireless receiver to determine the delay spread in a multipath environment.

. The wireless receiver of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of correlators can be used to more accurately determine where to look for peaks associated with the preamble packets.

. The wireless receiver of claim 20 , further comprising a correlators that is less than a full correlators, the less than full correlators configured to correlate the preamble packets.

. The wireless receiver of claim 11 , wherein the synchronization packets comprises a code.

. The wireless receiver of claim 22 , wherein the preamble packets also comprise a code.

. The wireless receiver of claim 23 , wherein the synchronization and preamble packets comprise the same code.

. The wireless receiver of claim 24 , wherein the code is a perfect sequence.

. The wireless receiver of claim 22 , wherein the synchronization packet comprises multiple copies of the code.

. The wireless receiver of claim 26 , wherein the synchronization packet further comprises an inverse of the code following the multiple copies of the code.

. The wireless receiver of claim 11 , wherein the length of the data packets is a fraction of the overall frame period.

. The wireless receiver of claim 28 , wherein the length of the data packets is ⅕th the overall frame period.

. The wireless receiver of claim 29 , wherein the length of the data packets is ⅛th overall frame period.
