Abstract

A modular printhead for a digital printer wherein the modules ( 2 ) may be mechanically aligned using specifically designed frame ( 3 ) supporting the modules ( 2 ). The frame ( 3 ) having a plurality of mounting sites ( 19 ) for mounting respective printhead modules ( 2 ) to the frame ( 3 ); wherein, at least one of the mounting sites ( 19 ) having mechanical adjustment mechanism ( 15, 16, 17 and 18 ) for reducing input movements to effect minute adjustments of the position of the printhead module ( 2 ) with respect to the frame ( 3 ).

Claims (15)

1. A modular printhead for a digital printer, the modular printhead comprising:

a support frame having a plurality of module engagement plates and associated plate adjustment mechanisms; and

a plurality of printhead modules, each of the modules has an ink jet nozzle chip and is mounted to one of the engagement plates respectively; wherein,

each of the adjustment mechanisms has an input screw acting on a series of levers for reducing rotation of the input screw to minute substantially linear displacement of the engagement plate, and thereby the corresponding module, relative to the remaining modules.

2. A modular printhead according to claim 1 wherein the series of levers is a unitary mechanism wherein localised necking allows relative movement of adjacent components.

3. A modular printhead according to claim 2 wherein the support frame comprises an elongate metallic chassis wherein the chassis is integrally formed with the engagement plates via the series of levers.

4. A modular printhead according to claim 1 further comprising a reservoir moulding for storing ink; and

at least one ink communication channel provided for each printhead module, the at least one ink communication channel adapted to facilitate ink flow from the reservoir moulding through the respective module engagement plate and into the respective printhead module.

5. A modular printhead according to claim 4 further comprising an elastomeric strip between the reservoir moulding and the support frame.

6. A modular printhead according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the printhead modules is provided with at least one ink funnel forming at least part of the ink communication channel and is plugged into the reservoir moulding via at least one corresponding aperture in the corresponding module engagement plate.

7. A modular printhead according to claim 6 wherein at least one of the printhead modules is provided with four ink funnels and the corresponding module engagement plate is provided with four of said apertures.

8. A modular printhead according to claim 6 wherein the at least one ink funnel provides said engagement means for engaging each printhead module with the corresponding module engagement plate.

9. A modular printhead according to claim 1 wherein each printhead chip of the printhead modules is bonded to a tape automated bond film supported by at least one moulding.

10. A modular printhead according to claim 1 wherein the ratio of axial movement of the input screw to the resultant linear displacement of the engagement plate is at least 500 to 1.

11. A modular printhead according to claim 1 wherein the linear displacement of the printhead module relative to the frame is less than 100 μm.
