Abstract

An orthopedic brace having length adjustable supports is provided. The brace comprises upper and lower supports rotatably connected by a hinge. Each of the supports comprises an elongate portion having a channel along part of its length, and a sliding upright that nests within the channel. The upright is incrementally longitudinally translatable within the channel so that the length of the support is adjustable. Flanges are provided along the edges of the channel to prevent lateral separation of the upright from the stationary portion. A spring-biased button protrudes from an upper surface of the channel. The button cooperates with one of a plurality of holes in the upright, providing a positive lock to retain the upright in one of a number of predetermined positions within the channel. The upright is also completely removable from the channel. Removal of the upright from the channel shortens the brace. Straps cooperate with brackets on the supports and/or uprights to secure the brace to a patient's leg.

Claims (20)

1. An orthopedic brace, comprising:

a rigid upright, the upright including a radius of curvature about an axis, the axis being substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the upright, the upright further including a plurality of holes that are spaced from one another along a length of the upright;

a channel member slidably coupled to the rigid upright, the channel member being constructed of a plastic and including a channel portion partially bounded by first and second oppositely disposed flanges, a floor surface of the channel portion including an opening; and

a spring-biased button disposed within the opening and protruding into the channel portion;

wherein, the channel portion slidably receives the rigid upright such that the floor of the channel portion abuts a first surface of the upright, the first and second flanges abut second and third surfaces of the upright, and the button is selectively disposable within one of at least two of the holes in the upright to thereby prevent further translation of the upright within the channel portion.

2. The orthopedic brace of claim 1 , wherein the rigid upright is constructed of a metal.

3. The orthopedic brace of claim 1 , wherein the holes in the upright are each substantially elliptical in shape.

4. The orthopedic brace of claim 1 , wherein the button is sized and shaped to fit within each of the holes in the upright.

5. The orthopedic brace of claim 1 , further comprising at least one padded cuff configured to be disposed between the brace and a wearer.

6. The orthopedic brace of claim 1 , wherein the channel member further comprises at least one slot configured to receive a strap.

7. The orthopedic brace of claim 1 , further comprising at least one strap configured to secure the brace to a wearer.

8. An orthopedic brace, comprising:

a rigid upright, the upright including a radius of curvature about an axis that is substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the upright, the upright further including a plurality of holes that are spaced from one another along a length of the upright;

a channel member slidably coupled to the rigid upright, the channel member being constructed of a plastic and including a channel portion partially bounded by first and second oppositely disposed flanges, a floor surface of the channel portion including a recess, the channel member further comprising at least one slot configured to receive a strap; and

a spring-biased button disposed within the recess and protruding into the channel portion;

wherein, the channel portion slidably receives the rigid upright such that the floor of the channel portion abuts a first surface of the upright, the first and second flanges abut second and third surfaces of the upright, and the button is selectively disposable within one of at least two of the holes in the upright to thereby prevent further translation of the upright within the channel portion.

9. The orthopedic brace of claim 8 , wherein the rigid upright is constructed of a metal.

10. The orthopedic brace of claim 8 , wherein the holes in the upright are each substantially elliptical in shape.

11. The orthopedic brace of claim 8 , wherein the button is sized and shaped to fit within one of at least two of the holes in the upright.

12. The orthopedic brace of claim 8 , further comprising at least one padded cuff configured to be disposed between the brace and a wearer.
