Abstract

A method and apparatus for displaying locally stored content objects is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving a message containing one or more parameters indicative of one or more characteristics of a client, and sending one of a plurality of groups of one or more content objects from a set of content objects to the client based on the one or more parameters, wherein each of the plurality of groups is suited for use with clients having a different set of one or more parameters.

Claims (28)

1. A method of an intermediary for pre-caching content at a client by filtering content based on characteristics of the client, the method comprising steps of:

(a) receiving, by an intermediary, one or more hardware characteristics of each of a plurality of clients;

(b) identifying, by the intermediary, a plurality of content objects from one or more content servers;

(c) associating, by the intermediary, with a first filter one or more contents objects of the plurality of content objects, the first filter comprising a specification of one or more hardware characteristics;

(d) determining, by the intermediary, that the one or more hardware characteristics of a first client match the specification of the first filter; and

(e) transmitting, by the intermediary responsive to the determination, an instruction to the first client to download the one or more content objects.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (a) further comprises receiving, by the intermediary, for each of the plurality of clients one or more of the following hardware characteristics: processor type, memory size, video card name, video card memory and type of network connection.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (a) further comprises receiving, by the intermediary, characteristics of software applications installed for each of the plurality of clients.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (b) further comprises identifying, by the intermediary, the plurality of content objects published to one or more channels by a content provider.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (c) further comprises specifying, by the first filter, a range of values of each of one or more hardware characteristics.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (c) further comprises specifying, by the first filter, a range of values for a processor type.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (c) further comprises specifying, by the first filter, a range of values for memory of a video card, name of the video card or type of the video card.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (c) further comprises associating better quality content objects with the first filter and lower quality content objects with a second filter, the first filter specifying hardware characteristics for a client having more resources than specified by the second filter.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (d) further comprises determining, by the intermediary, that one or more hardware characteristics of a second client do not match the specification of the first filter and determining that the one or more hardware characteristics of the second client match a second filter.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein step (e) further comprises transmitting to the first client the instruction comprising identification of a device from which the first client is to download the one or more content objects.

11. A system for pre-caching content at a client by filtering content based on characteristics of the client, the system comprising

an intermediary receiving one or more hardware characteristics of each of a plurality of clients and identifying a plurality of content objects from one or more content servers;

a first filter comprising a specification of one or more hardware characteristics, the first filter associated with one or more contents objects of the plurality of content objects;

wherein the intermediary determines that the one or more hardware characteristics of a first client match the specification of the first filter and responsive to the determination transmits an instruction to the first client to download the one or more content objects.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the intermediary receives for each of the plurality of clients one or more of the following hardware characteristics: processor type, memory size, video card name, video card memory and type of network connection.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the intermediary receives characteristics of software applications installed for each of the plurality of clients.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the intermediary identifies the plurality of content objects published to one or more channels by a content provider.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first filter specifies a range of values of each of the one or more hardware characteristics.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first filter specifies a range of values for a processor type.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first filter specifies a range of values for memory of a video card, name of the video card or type of the video card.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the intermediary associates better quality content objects with the first filter and lower quality content objects with a second filter, the first filter specifying hardware characteristics for a client having more resources than specified by the second filter.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the intermediary determines that one or more hardware characteristics of a second client do not match the specification of the first filter and determining that the one or more hardware characteristics of the second client match a second filter.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the intermediary transmits to the first client the instruction comprising identification of a device from which the first client is to download the one or more content objects.
