Abstract

An optical power control system for a semiconductor source spectroscopy system controls power fluctuations in the tunable signal from the spectroscopy system and thus improves the noise performance of the system. This general solution has advantages relative to other systems that simply detect reference power levels during the scan and then correct the detected signal after interaction with the sample by reducing the requirements for coordinating the operation of the sample detectors and power or reference detectors. The spectroscopy system comprises a semiconductor source and a tunable filter. The combination of the semiconductor source and tunable signal illuminate a sample with a tunable signal, being tunable over a scan band. The power control system comprises an amplitude detector system for detecting the power of the tunable optical signal and power control system for regulating the amplitude of the tunable optical signal in response to its detected power.

Claims (13)

1. A hybrid cavity semiconductor laser comprising:

a semiconductor optical amplifier in a linear laser cavity defined by two mirrors;

a Fabry-Perot tunable filter in the laser cavity that controls a wavelength of operation of the laser to scan over a scan band to spectroscopically analyze a target; and

a fiber forming part of the linear laser cavity, wherein the fiber is polarization controlling fiber; and

wherein the laser cavity comprises a free-space portion including the semiconductor optical amplifier and the Fabry-Perot tunable filter, which are in the same free-space portion with no intervening fiber between the semiconductor optical amplifier and the Fabry-Perot tunable filter.

2. A laser as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the fiber is polarization maintaining fiber.

3. A laser as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the fiber propagates only a single polarization.

4. A laser as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising at least one isolator for removing light reflected by the tunable filter from the cavity.

5. A laser as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a filter lens component for coupling light between the amplifier and the tunable filter.

6. A laser as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a fiber lens component for coupling light between the filter and the fiber.

7. A laser system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the Fabry-Perot tunable filter is a microelectromechanical tunable filter.

8. A laser system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the Fabry-Perot tunable filter is a tunable thin film filter.

9. A laser system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the Fabry-Perot tunable filter is a thermally tuned thin film filter.
