Abstract

An apparatus and method for use in performing ablation or coagulation of organs and other tissue includes a metallized fabric electrode array which is substantially absorbent and/or permeable to moisture and gases such as steam and conformable to the body cavity. The array includes conductive regions separated by insulated regions arranged to produce ablation to a predetermined depth. Following placement of the ablation device into contact with the tissue to be ablated, an RF generator is used to deliver RF energy to the conductive regions and to thereby induce current flow from the electrodes to tissue to be ablated. As the current heats the tissue, moisture (such as steam or liquid) leaves the tissue causing the tissue to dehydrate. Suction may be applied to facilitate moisture removal. The moisture permeability and/or absorbency of the electrode carrying member allows the moisture to leave the ablation site so as to prevent the moisture from providing a path of conductivity for the current.

Claims (17)

1. A method of ablating walls of a hollow body organ, comprising the steps of:

providing an ablation device comprising a tubular member and a mesh electrode array carried by the tubular member;

positioning the array within a hollow body organ surrounded by walls;

applying suction through the tubular member and the mesh array to pull interior surfaces of the walls into contact with the array; and

delivering ablation energy through the array to the walls while continuing to apply suction through the tubular member;

wherein the mesh electrode array comprises a knit of metallized yarns, the array being expanded from a collapsed position to an expanded position, and wherein the positioning step includes passing the array in the collapsed position into the organ and then expanding the array to the expanded position.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the knit is stretchable and wherein the expanding step includes causing the knit to stretch.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the providing step provides a knit comprised of yarns of nylon and spandex plated with conductive material.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method includes the step of passing an insufflation gas through the tubular member to insufflate the body organ.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the insufflation step is performed prior to the applying step.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the insufflation step is performed after the delivering step.

7. The method of claim 3 , wherein the nylon yarns are plated with conductive material and the spandex yarns remain unplated.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the spandex yarns provide the stretch and recovery of the knit and the plated nylon provides the conductivity of the knit.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the conductive material is comprised of a composite layer of at least two different metals

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the metals are comprised of silver and gold.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the conductive material is comprised of silver.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the conductive material is comprised of gold.
