Abstract

A nutritionally complete infant formula containing sialic acid derived from one or a number of nutritionally appropriate sources is described.

Claims (9)

1. A nutritionally complete infant formula comprising a total protein content of between about 12 and 16 grams/liter of which no more than 40% by weight is provided by at least one casein glycomacropeptide, wherein the at least one casein glycomacropeptide has an enhanced concentration of sialic acid of from about 60 mg/g protein to about 200 mg/g protein, and wherein the casein glycomacropeptide is present in an amount sufficient to provide a sialic acid level of between about 250 and about 1500 mg/liter of infant formula.

2. The infant formula according to claim 1 , having a sialic acid level of at least about 300 mg/liter.

3. The infant formula according to claim 1 , having a sialic acid level of at least about 400 mg/liter.

4. The infant formula according to claim 1 , having a sialic acid level of at least about 600 mg/liter.

5. The infant formula according to claim 1 , having a total protein content of between 13 and 15 grams/liter of which no more than 30% by weight is provided by at least one casein glycomacropeptide having an enhanced concentration of sialic acid of from about 60 mg/g protein to about 200 mg/g protein.

6. The infant formula according to claim 1 , having a total protein content of between 13 and 15 grams/liter of which no more than 15% by weight is provided by at least one casein glycomacropeptide having an enhanced concentration of sialic acid of from about 60 mg/g protein to about 200 mg/g protein.

7. The infant formula according to claim 1 , having a total protein content of between 13 and 15 grams/liter of which no more than 30% by weight is provided by at least one casein glycomacropeptide having an enhanced concentration of sialic acid of from about 60 mg/g protein to about 200 mg/g protein and having a threonine content of not over 7 grams/16 grams nitrogen.

8. The infant formula according to claim 1 having a total protein content of between 13 and 15 grams/liter of which no more than 30% by weight is provided by at least one casein glycomacropeptide having an enhanced concentration of sialic acid of from about 60 mg/g protein to about 200 mg/g protein and having a threonine content of not over 4 grams/16 grams nitrogen.

9. The infant formula according to claim 6 , having a total protein content of about 14 grams/liter of which not over 4% by weight is threonine and having sialic acid content of at least 400 mg/liter.
