Abstract

A lithium ion secondary battery in which a safety vent as a safety device for a swelling phenomenon functions under a low pressure. A notch is formed in an inner surface of a large-area wall of the secondary battery, and an auxiliary notch is formed in an outer surface to correspond to the notch formed in the inner surface.

Claims (17)

1. A lithium ion secondary battery including an electrode assembly, which is formed of a positive electrode plate, a negative electrode plate and an isolation film, which are wound together, the lithium ion secondary battery further including a can, the can comprising:

a pair of first walls having a plate shape, which are separated from each other by a predetermined distance;

a pair of second walls having a plate shape, which have an area less than that of the pair of first walls and connect two longitudinal sides of the pair of first walls;

a third wall having a plate shape, which has an area less than that of the pair of second walls and which is connected to both of the pair of first walls and the pair of second walls; and

an opening, which is opposed to the third wall, to allow the electrode assembly to be coupled thereto;

a cap assembly, welded to the pair of first walls and the pair of second walls, which closes the opening of the can and prevents the electrode assembly from being detached from the can, the cap assembly comprising a cap plate; and

an electrolyte injected into the can through the cap plate, wherein a safety vent is obtained by forming a v-shaped notch and an auxiliary v-shaped notch on respective inner surfaces and outer surfaces of at least one of the first walls, the pair of second walls, the third wall and the cap plate, respectively, wherein the auxiliary v-shaped notch is formed at a surface opposite to a surface at which the v-shaped notch is formed, and a position at which the v-shaped notch is formed corresponds to a position at which the auxiliary v-shaped notch is formed such that a vertex of the v-shaped notch is aligned with a vertex of the auxiliary v-shaped notch.

2. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the safety vent is formed in a circle shape at the cap plate.

3. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the v-shaped notch is formed in a predetermined depth by pressing the inner surface of at least one of the first walls, the pair of second walls, the third wall and the cap plate, and the notch includes a first slant surface and a second slant surface forming a predetermined angle at the vertex of the v-shaped notch and wherein the auxiliary notch is formed in a predetermined depth by pressing the outer surface of at least one of the first walls, the pair of second walls, the third wall and the cap plate, and the auxiliary notch includes a first slant surface and a second slant surface forming a predetermined angle at the vertex of the auxiliary v-shaped notch.

4. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 2 , wherein the v-shaped notch has a shallower depth than that of the auxiliary v-shaped notch.

5. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 3 , wherein the v-shaped notch and the auxiliary v-shaped notch are formed at an inner surface and an outer surface, respectively of one of the pair of first walls.

6. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the v-shaped notch has a larger depth than that of the auxiliary v-shaped notch.

7. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the safety vent has a line shape which is parallel to a longitudinal side of the third wall of the can.

8. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the safety vent has a length which corresponds to 50% to 90% of a length of the longitudinal side of the third wall.

9. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the safety vent has a line shape which is parallel to a longitudinal side of the pair of second walls of the can.

10. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the safety vent has a length which corresponds to 50% to 90% of a length of the longitudinal side of the pair of second walls.

11. The lithium ion secondary battery according to claim 1 , wherein the safety vent has a line shape which is bent one or more times such that a portion extends in a longitudinal direction of the pair of second walls and another portion extends in a longitudinal direction of the third wall.
