Abstract

Visual structuring of multivariable data sets provided in records which include fields, and are displayed in tabular form. A method comprising: defining a key field; sorting records by defined key field; finding equivalent field values in fields in records arranged adjacent to each other; defining a block for fields having equivalent field values; displaying one field value of fields of a block having equivalent field values and masking all other fields within the block having equivalent field values like the one field value. Facilitating monitoring or analysis of large multivariable data sets provided in records and displayed in tabular form it is proposed to define blocks of fields having equivalent field values and display only one field value of a block. The visual output is useful to identify patterns indicative of an attack. A service provider monitors records provided by a customer and notifies the customer of the attack.

Claims (15)

1. A computer implemented method for visual structuring comprising:

providing visual structuring of multivariable data sets in records, wherein each event of a plurality of events being illustrated as a record from a set of records, said record is represented in tabular form on a display device, each record forms a row in a tabular view, each record includes a plurality of fields characterizing different attributes or properties of said each event, field values of a same field in the records are arranged in columns;

defining a key field used for sorting the records;

sorting said set of records to find patterns or regularities employing said key field;

grouping equivalent field values of the key field in an equivalent field value group;

forming a corresponding blocks for each equivalent field value group, each corresponding block having a block size;

displaying only one field value for each block, and hiding or masking all other field values of said each block,

employing a visibility enhancement taken from a group of enhancements consisting of colors, hatching, adding border lines to cells, or removing border lines of cells or any combination of these enhancements; and

enabling an operator only to see each respective one field value of the field in the block and monitor said set of records.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

showing a detail view in a separate window by said operator selecting a block or a group of events, said detail view showing field values in a field of the records related to the block or group selected; or

calling up domains when said operator expects to find some regularity within data of a collection, to show potential patterns within field values and how the potential patterns differ over several fields; and

enabling said operator, when a group selected includes entries or records all having a same field value in a [particular, exhibiting whether another field also includes only a same single value, includes randomly distributed unique field values, or a sequence of ascending field values without duplications.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

showing a detail view providing an indication about the temporal distribution of field values, when each entry is associated with a time stamp for at least one certain field, such as the key field in the data.
