Abstract

An method for providing an objective manifest refraction of a patient's eye includes obtaining at least fourth-order Zernike wavefront aberration information, fitting a second-order only polynomial to the at least fourth-order data, and using this information to predict the patient's manifest refraction with an accuracy approaching the patient's subjective manifest refraction. A method is also described for prescribing an accurate vision correction based upon the objective manifest refraction. A display according to the invention includes higher-order wavefront aberrations, lower order wavefront aberrations, numerical indicia of predicted manifest refraction, and images of qualitative assessments of a patient's vision quality. A device for obtaining an objective manifest refraction is described.

Claims (35)

1. A vision diagnostic apparatus, comprising:

an input source of a diagnostic measurement data of a patient's eye that is indicative of at least fourth-order Zernike wavefront aberrations or their equivalents;

a calculating component programmed for fitting only a second-order polynomial to the diagnostic measurement data and calculating an objective vision metric; and

a display component having a visual display of the calculated objective vision metric.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the input source is a stored input of the diagnostic measurement data on a readable medium.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the input source is a remotely acquired and transmitted input of the diagnostic measurement data.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the input source is a contemporaneously measured input of the diagnostic measurement data provided by a diagnostic device component of the apparatus.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the diagnostic device component is a wavefront sensor.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the wavefront sensor is a Hartmann-Shack sensor.

7. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the diagnostic device component is a topographer that has a ray tracing component.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the diagnostic measurement data is ray tracing information.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric comprises an image of the patient's eye's wavefront aberrations represented by second-order and lower Zernike coefficients.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the visual display further comprises a manifest refraction indicia.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the manifest refraction indicia is a numerical representation of a predicted phoropter refraction.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the visual display further comprises an image of the wavefront aberrations represented by third-order and higher Zernike coefficients or their respective equivalents.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the visual display further comprises a manifest refraction indicia.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the manifest refraction indicia is a numerical representation of a predicted phoropter refraction.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the image of the wavefront aberrations represented by the second-order and lower Zernike coefficients consists of a representation of astigmatism.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the image of the wavefront aberrations represented by the second-order and lower Zernike coefficients consists of a representation of astigmatism and a manifest refraction indicia.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the manifest refraction indicia is a numerical representation of a predicted phoropter refraction.

18. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the image of the wavefront aberrations represented by the second-order and lower Zernike coefficients consists of a representation of astigmatism and defocus.

19. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the image of the wavefront aberrations represented by the second-order and lower Zernike coefficients consists of a representation of astigmatism, defocus and a manifest refraction indicia.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the manifest refraction indicia is a numerical representation of a predicted phoropter refraction.

21. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric comprises a manifest refraction indicia.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the manifest refraction indicia is a numerical representation of a predicted phoropter refraction.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the numerical representation of the predicted phoropter refraction has a value that differs from a subjective refraction value of the patient's vision by no more than 0.5 to 0.75 Diopter.

24. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the numerical representation of the predicted phoropter refraction has a value that differs from a subjective refraction value of the patient's vision by no more than 0.25 to 0.50 Diopter.

25. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the numerical representation of the predicted phoropter refraction has a value that differs from a subjective refraction value of the patient's vision by less than 0.25 Diopter.

26. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric comprises a numerical indicia of a point spread function.

27. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric comprises an image representation of a point spread function.

28. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric comprises a numerical indicia of a Strehl ratio.

29. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric comprises an image representation of a Strehl ratio.

30. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric corresponds to at least one of an uncorrected aberration state, a standard (lower-order) correction state, and a custom (best corrected) correction state.

31. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric corresponds to a pupil diameter of the patient's eye of between about 3 mm to 4 mm.

32. The apparatus of claim 31 , wherein the visual display of the calculated objective vision metric corresponds to a pupil diameter of the patient's eye of about 3 mm.
