Abstract

A medical device having electrically conductive properties includes an electrically conductive member. The electrically conductive member has an anti-antenna geometrical shape. The anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member is shaped such that currents induced in the anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by radio frequency fields, offset currents induced in the medical device by the radio frequency fields.

Claims (22)

1. A medical device comprising:

a lead; and

an electrically conductive member having an anti-antenna geometrical shape coupled to said lead;

said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member from electromagnetic interference, produce a net current having a substantially zero magnitude.

2. A medical device according to claim 1 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member is shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, from magnetic resonance imaging, produce a net current having a substantially zero magnitude.

3. A medical device according to claim 2 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member is

a metal component placed in a tissue region.

4. A medical device according to claim 2 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member is

placed in a tissue region.

5. A medical device according to claim 1 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, from changing external magnetic fields, produce a net current having a substantially zero magnitude.

6. A medical device according to claim 1 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, from electromagnetic radiation, produce a net current having a substantially zero magnitude.

7. A medical device having electrically conductive properties, comprising:

an electrically conductive member having an anti-antenna geometrical shape;

said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by electromagnetic interference, passively neutralize currents induced in the medical device by electromagnetic interference.

8. A medical device according to claim 7 wherein the said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by changing external magnetic fields, passively neutralize currents induced in the medical device by changing external magnetic fields.

9. A medical device according to claim 7 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by electromagnetic radiation, passively neutralize currents induced in the medical device by electromagnetic radiation.

10. A medical device according to claim 7 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by radio frequency energy, passively neutralize currents induced in the medical device by radio frequency energy.

11. A medical device having electrically conductive properties, comprising:

an electrically conductive member having an anti-antenna geometrical shape;

said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by electromagnetic interference, offset currents induced in the medical device by the electromagnetic interference.

12. A medical device according to claim 11 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by changing external magnetic fields, offset currents induced in the medical device changing external magnetic fields.

13. A medical device according to claim 11 wherein said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member being shaped such that currents induced in said anti-antenna geometrical shaped electrically conductive member, by radio frequency energy, offset currents induced in the medical device by radio frequency energy.
