Abstract

A pair of mating connectors includes a receptacle having an insulative housing and at least one conductive receptacle contact with a pair of spaced walls forming a plug contact receiving space. The plug connector has an insulative housing and at least one conductive contact having a projection engageable in the plug receiving space of the receptacle contact. The open structure of both the receptacle and plug contacts enhances heat dissipation and allows flexibility in achieving desired contact normal forces. The contact construction is especially useful for electronic power connectors.

Claims (24)

1. Matable electrical connectors, comprising:

a) a plug connector comprising:

i) a plug housing; and

ii) a plug contact at least partially disposed within the plug housing, the plug contact including a projection for engaging a receptacle contact, the projection having a proximal section and an outwardly directed arcuate section, opposed cantilevered beams capable of being pressed against to each other, and a plurality of terminals each extending perpendicular to a respective one of the cantilevered beams; and

b) a receptacle connector comprising:

i) a receptacle housing including a front mating face; and

ii) a receptacle contact disposed within the receptacle housing, the receptacle contact including a pair of spaced apart side walls, a plurality of terminals for engaging a printed circuit structure and each extending perpendicular to a respective one of the side walls, and a plug contact receiving space extending between the side walls for receiving the plug contact projection, each of the pair of spaced apart side walls having a front region proximate the front mating face and a second region that is distal the front region;

wherein the receptacle housing includes an opening that is in fluid communication with the plug contact receiving space and that permits mating of the plug connector with the receptacle connector completely in a first direction and, alternatively, completely in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction, and wherein in the first direction of mating, the plug contact projection, via the outwardly-directed arcuate section, initially substantially only engages the second region of the side walls.

2. The matable electrical connectors of claim 1 , wherein a medial air gap exists between portions of the opposed cantilevered beams when inserted into the plug contact receiving space of the receptacle contact.

3. The matable electrical connectors of claim 1 , wherein the plug contact further includes a pair of spaced apart sidewalls from which the projection extends.

4. The matable electrical connectors of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle housing opening extends along at least portions of both the front mating face and a face that is positioned substantially orthogonal to the front mating face.

5. Matable electrical connectors, comprising:

a) a plug connector comprising:

i) a plug housing; and

ii) a plug contact at least partially disposed within the plug housing, the plug contact including a pair of spaced apart side walls and cantilevered beams each extending from an edge of each of the pair of spaced apart side walls, and a plurality of terminals for engaging a printed circuit structure and extending perpendicular to a respective one of the side walls, wherein each of the cantilevered beams includes a proximal section and an arcuate section extending from the proximal section and being capable of being pressed against the arcuate section of the other cantilevered beam; and

b) a receptacle connector comprising:

i) a receptacle housing including a first mating face having a first opening therein, and a second mating face positioned substantially orthogonal to the first mating face and having a second opening therein; and

ii) a receptacle contact disposed within the receptacle housing, the receptacle contact including a second pair of spaced apart side walls and a plug contact receiving space defined therebetween, the plug contact receiving space being completely accessible to the plug contact through the first mating face alone, the second mating face alone, and both of the first mating face and the second mating face;

whereupon mating the plug connector with the receptacle connector, each of the cantilevered beams is resiliently deflected inwardly by an adjacent one of the second pair of spaced apart side walls.

6. The matable electrical connectors of claim 5 , wherein the first and second openings are defined by a single, continuous opening.

7. The matable electrical connectors of claim 5 , wherein each of the cantilevered beams further includes a distal section extending from the arcuate section, and wherein the distal sections come together when the plug connector is mated with the receptacle connector.

8. The matable electrical connectors of claim 5 , wherein the cantilevered beams oppose one another and a medial air gap exists between portions of the cantilevered beams when inserted into the plug contact receiving space of the receptacle contact.

9. The matable electrical connectors of claim 5 , wherein the first opening and the second opening adjoin to form a continuous opening and the plug connector is matable with the receptacle connector horizontally and vertically.

10. The matable electrical connectors of claim 5 , wherein the cantilevered beams further include a distal section, and wherein the cantilevered beams are tapered from the proximal section to the distal section.
