Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for determining if an alarm originating from a component within a communications network impacts service of said network. One embodiment includes scanning a first data structure for faulty network components which may potentially affect network service, determining network components that are supported by the faulty network component, calculating a percentage of the network components indicating a fault, and determining if the percentage of the network components is above a threshold. If the percentage is above the threshold the faulty network component is determined to be service impacting. Finally, communicating to a second data structure that the faulty network component impacts service of the communications network.

Claims (39)

1. One or more nontransitory computer-storage media having computer-useable instructions embodied thereon for performing a method of determining if an alarm originating from a component within a communications network impacts service of the network, the method comprising:

referencing a first data structure to identify a faulty network component, wherein the faulty network component is one of an optical facility or a digital facility;

when the faulty network component is an optical facility, determining a set of a number of network components that are supported by the faulty network component, wherein the number of network components are digital facilities;

calculating a percentage of network components in said set that indicate a fault by dividing a number of network components that indicate a fault by the number of network components in said set;

determining if the percentage is above a threshold, wherein if the percentage is above the threshold then identifying the faulty network component as a service-impacting faulty network component, which is one that, if not corrected, actually impacts service to an end user of the communications network; and

communicating that the service-impacting faulty network component impacts the service of the communications network.

2. The media of claim 1 , wherein the network components that are supported by the faulty network component are DS3 facilities.

3. The media of claim 2 , wherein a probe source determines if the faulty network component is identified.

4. The media of claim 3 , wherein communicating that the service-impacting faulty network component impacts the service of the communications network includes communicating to a second data structure.

5. The media of claim 4 , wherein an event processor communicates to the second data structure that the service-impacting faulty network component impacts the service of the communications network.

6. The media of claim 5 , wherein the first data structure comprises topology data on the communications network, and the second data structure comprises service impacting event data to be displayed by a presentation device.

7. The media of claim 6 , wherein the first and second data structures comprise a group consisting essentially of a database or spreadsheet.

8. The media of claim 1 , wherein the optical facility is one of an OC facility and an OM facility.

9. A method of indicating a faulty network component as impacting network service of communications network, the method comprising:

determining whether the faulty network component has a potential to negatively affect the network service beyond a determined level;

when faulty network is an optical facility searching for network components that are supported by the faulty network component;

calculating a percentage of faulty supported network components by dividing a total number of supported network components that indicate a fault by a total number of supported network components, wherein the percentage is calculated after a predetermined amount of time has passed since determining that the faulty network component has the potential to negatively affect the network service beyond the determined level;

based on a threshold, marking the faulty network component as impacting the network service, wherein service to an end user of the communications network is actually impacted, wherein the threshold relates to the percentage of faulty supported network components; and

communicating to a data structure that the faulty network component impacts the service of the communications network.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the network components that are supported by the faulty network component are DS3 facilities.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein a probe source determines if the faulty network component potentially affects service.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein an event processor communicates to the data structure that the faulty network component impacts the service of the communications network.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the data structure comprises service impacting event data to be displayed by a presentation device.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the threshold is a preconfigured threshold that is determined based on a configuration of the network.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the data structure comprises a group consisting essentially of a database or spreadsheet.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the sparing source, probe source, and event processor comprise a group consisting essentially of personal computers, laptops, and workstations.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein marking the faulty network component as impacting the network service comprises changing a state of a variable associated with the faulty network component from a first state.

18. A method of incorporating into a data structure having information on problems in a communications network that may potentially impact service of the network, the method comprising:

scanning the data structure for a faulty network component, wherein the faulty network component is one of an optical facility or a digital facility;

when the faulty network component is an optical facility, determining for the faulty network component a set of network components that are supported by the faulty network component, wherein the network components are digital facilities;

calculating a percentage of the network components in said set indicating a fault by dividing a number of network components that indicate a fault by the number of network components in said set;

determining if the percentage is above a preconfigured value, wherein the faulty network component is determined to be service impacting if the percentage is above the preconfigured value, wherein a service-impacting faulty network component is one that, if not corrected, actually impacts service to an end user of the communications network;

communicating to the data structure that the faulty network component impacts the service of the communications network.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the network components that are supported by the faulty network component are DS3 facilities.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein a probe source determines if the faulty network component is incorporated into the data structure.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein an event processor communicates to the data structure that the faulty network component impacts the service of the communications network.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the data structure comprises topology data and event data on the communications network to be displayed by a presentation device.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the data structure comprises a group consisting essentially of a database or spreadsheet.

24. The method of claim 18 , wherein the optical facility is one of an OC facility and an OM facility.
