Abstract

Novel polymer electrolyte compositions are described. In accordance with one embodiment, the novel composition includes at least one type of a polymer repeat unit including more than one property imparting unit. The property imparting unit has at least one member selected from the group consisting of conductivity imparting unit, stability imparting unit and any combinations thereof.

Claims (46)

1 . A polymer electrolyte composition, comprising at least one type of a polymer repeat unit including more than one property imparting unit, said property imparting unit having at least one member selected from the group consisting of conductivity imparting unit, stability imparting unit and any combinations thereof.

The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , said polymer repeat unit further including a delinking agent attached to at least one of said property imparting unit, wherein said delinking agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond, CH 2 , CH 3 , CF 2 , CF 3 , Si, O, S, functional groups, aromatic residues and any combinations thereof.

The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said conductivity imparting unit includes a delinking agent and an ion conducting moiety, said delinking agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond, CH 2 , CH 3 , CF 2 , CF 3 , Si, O, S, functional groups, aromatic residues and any combinations thereof and said ion conducting moiety includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of sulfonic acid, derivatives of sulfonic acid, phosphonic acid, derivatives of phosphonic acid, carboxylic acid, derivatives of carboxylic acid, heterocycles such as imidazole, benzimidazole, pyrazole and any combinations thereof.

The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said stability imparting unit includes a delinking agent and a cross-linking agent, said delinking agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond, CH 2 , CH 3 , CF 2 , CF 3 , Si, O, S, functional groups, aromatic residues and any combinations thereof and said cross-linking agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of acrylates, methacrylates, alkenes, alkynes, epoxides, amines and amine derivatives, fumarates, maleates, maliemides and any combinations thereof.

The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said stability imparting unit includes a delinking agent and an antioxidizing agent, said delinking agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond, CH 2 , CH 3 , CF 2 , CF 3 , Si, O, S, functional groups, aromatic residues and any combinations thereof and said antioxidizing agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of phosphates, phosphate esters, phosphonic acid, derivatives of phosphonic acid, metal chelating agents and any combinations thereof.

The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said stability imparting unit includes a delinking agent and a blocking agent, said delinking agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond, CH 2 , CH 3 , CF 2 , CF 3 , Si, O, S, functional groups, aromatic residues and any combinations thereof and said blocking agent includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of branched hydrocarbon chains, long hydrocarbon chains, bulky hydrocarbon groups, branched fluorocarbon chains, long fluorocarbon chains, bulky fluorocarbon groups and any combinations thereof.

7 . The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said conductivity imparting unit includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of sulfonic acid, derivatives of sulfonic acid, phosphonic acid, derivatives of phosphonic acid, imidazole and any combinations thereof.

8 . The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said stability imparting unit includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of allyls, substituted allyls vinyls, susubstituted vinyls, amines, epoxides and any combinations thereof.

9 . The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said stability imparting unit includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of phosphates, phosphate esters, phosphonic acid, derivatives of phosphonic acid, metal chelating agents and any combinations thereof.

10 . The polymer electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein said stability imparting unit includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of branched hydrocarbon chains, long hydrocarbon chains, branched fluorocarbon chains, long fluorocarbon chains and any combinations thereof.

11 . The polymer electrolyte of claim 1 , wherein said polymer repeat unit having a structure

wherein Z represents said property imparting unit

Q includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of SO 2 , CO, CF 2 and any combinations thereof.

Q′ includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond,

SO 2 , CO, CF 2 , CH 2 , C(CH 3 ) 2 , C(CF 3 ) 2 , Ar, S, O and any combinations thereof, and

U and U′ independently include at least one member selected from the group consisting of S, O and combinations thereof.

12 . The polymer electrolyte of claim 1 , wherein said polymer repeat unit having a structure:

wherein Z represents said property imparting unit,

Q includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of SO 2 , CO, CF 2 and any combinations thereof, and

U and U′ independently include at least one member selected from the group consisting of S, O and combinations thereof.

13 . The polymer electrolyte of claim 1 , wherein said polymer repeat unit having a structure:

wherein Z represents said property imparting unit

Q includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of SO 2 , CO,

CF 2 and any combinations thereof.

Q′ includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond,

SO 2 , CO, CF 2 , CH 2 , C(CH 3 ) 2 , C(CF 3 ) 2 , Ar, S, O and any combinations thereof, and

U and U′ independently include at least one member selected from the group consisting of S, O and combinations thereof.

14 . A polymer electrolyte, comprising:

a first type of polymer repeat unit; and

a second type of polymer repeat unit,

wherein said first type of polymer repeat unit includes and has associated with it more than one property imparting unit, said property imparting unit associated with said first type of polymer repeat unit having at least one member selected from the group consisting of conductivity imparting unit, stability imparting unit and any combinations thereof.

The polymer electrolyte of claim 14 , wherein said second type of polymer repeat unit includes and has associated with it at least one property imparting unit, said property imparting unit associated with said second type of polymer repeat unit need not be the same as said property imparting unit associated with said first type of polymer repeat unit.

16 . The polymer electrolyte of claim 14 , wherein said second type of polymer repeat unit does not include a property imparting unit.

The polymer electrolyte of claim 14 , further comprising a third type of polymer repeat unit, wherein said third type of polymer repeat unit includes and has associated with it more than one property imparting unit, said property imparting unit associated with said third type of polymer repeat unit having at least one member selected from the group consisting of conductivity imparting unit, stability imparting unit and any combinations thereof.

18 . The polymer electrolyte of claim 14 , further comprising a third type of polymer repeat unit, wherein said third type, said third type of polymer repeat unit does not include a property imparting unit.

19 . A polymer electrolyte composition, comprising at least one type of a polymer repeat unit including a structure

wherein Z represents said property imparting unit

Q includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of SO 2 , CO,

(CF 2 ) and any combinations thereof,

Q′ includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of C—C bond,

SO 2 , CO, (CF 2 ), (CH 2 ), C(CH 3 ) 2 , C(CF 3 ) 2 , Ar, S, O and any combinations thereof, and

U and U′ independently include at least one member selected from the group consisting of S, O and combinations thereof.

20 . A fuel cell, comprising:

a cathode;

an anode; and

an electrolyte separating said cathode and anode, wherein at least one of said cathode, said anode and said polymer electrolyte at least partially includes at least one type of a polymer repeat unit which has more than one property imparting unit, said property imparting unit containing at least one member selected from the group consisting of conductivity imparting unit, stability imparting unit and any combinations thereof.
