Abstract

The invention relates generally to a system and method for testing fuel evaporative systems, and more particularly to a stand-alone tank tester system (and method) for testing vehicle fuel tank integrity. Furthermore, a self-contained calibration tank with switchable leak sizes for calibrating the tank tester to multiple leak sizes is provided. Constant flow and vacuum methods for testing fuel tank integrity are also provided.

Claims (127)

1. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a source of pressurized gas connected to the pneumatic hose;

a pressure regulator for controlling the flow of gas from the source of pressurized gas to the fuel tank;

a pressure transducer for measuring the pressure level in the fuel tank;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes;

a calibration tank; and

a housing enclosing the calibration tank and at least one of the source of pressurized gas, the pressure regulator, the pressure transducer, or the processor.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the calibration tank comprises a bladder that can be pressurized.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a tank adaptor interlock, wherein the tank adaptor interlock comprises means for preventing the tank adapter from being removed from the fuel tank unless the pressure inside the fuel tank is equal to a pressure of a testing environment.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising a relief valve, wherein the relief valve is opened to allow the release of pressure from the fuel tank.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tank adaptor comprises a pliable material that is impermeable to gasoline constituents.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a temperature sensor for measuring a vapor temperature inside the fuel tank; and

a data analysis module for utilizing one or more temperature measurements from inside the fuel tank in fuel tank leak size calculations.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a data analysis module for utilizing measurements of the fuel tank's vapor space in fuel tank leak size calculations.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a data analysis module for utilizing Reid Vapor Space measurements in fuel tank leak size calculations.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the source of pressurized gas comprises a source of compressed nitrogen.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the source of pressurized gas comprises a source of compressed air.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the source of pressurized gas comprises a piston compressing gas within a cylinder.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for detecting hydrocarbon vapor from an area outside of the fuel tank.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the means for detecting hydrocarbon vapor comprises a wand placed near an area outside of the fuel tank, and wherein:

the fuel tank is pressurized;

a leak in the fuel tank emits hydrocarbon vapor;

the wand is placed adjacent to the leak; and

a precise location of the leak is indicated by the presence of hydrocarbon vapor in a precise area outside the fuel tank.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a memory device.

15. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a vacuum device connected to the pneumatic hose, wherein the vacuum device is adapted to reduce the pressure inside the fuel tank below an ambient pressure;

a pressure regulator for controlling the pressure level inside the fuel tank;

a pressure transducer for measuring the pressure level in the fuel tank;

a memory device for electronically storing information;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes;

a calibration tank; and

a housing enclosing the calibration tank and at least one of the vacuum device, the pressure regulator, the pressure transducer, the memory device, or the processor.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the calibration tank comprises a bladder that can be pressurized.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising a tank adaptor interlock, wherein the tank adaptor interlock comprises means for preventing the tank adapter from being removed from the fuel tank unless the pressure inside the fuel tank is equal to a pressure of a testing environment.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising a relief valve, wherein the relief valve is opened to allow the release of pressure from the fuel tank.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the tank adaptor comprises a pliable material that is impermeable to gasoline constituents.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising:

a temperature sensor for measuring a vapor temperature inside the fuel tank; and

a data analysis module for utilizing one or more temperature measurements from inside the fuel tank in fuel tank leak size calculations.

21. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising a data analysis module for utilizing measurements of the fuel tank's vapor space in fuel tank leak size calculations.

22. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising a data analysis module for utilizing Reid Vapor Space measurements in fuel tank leak size calculations.

23. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a cylinder connected to the pneumatic hose;

a piston disposed within the cylinder;

force application means for applying force to the piston

a sensor for determining the position of the piston within the cylinder;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes;

a calibration tank; and

a housing enclosing the calibration tank and at least one of the cylinder, the piston, the force application means, the sensor, or the processor.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the calibration tank comprises a bladder that can be pressurized.

25. The apparatus of claim 23 , further comprising a tank adaptor interlock, wherein the tank adaptor interlock comprises means for preventing the tank adapter from being removed from the fuel tank unless the pressure inside the fuel tank is equal to a pressure of a testing environment.

26. The apparatus of claim 25 , further comprising a relief valve, wherein the relief valve is opened to allow the release of pressure from the fuel tank.

27. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the tank adaptor comprises a pliable material that is impermeable to gasoline constituents.

28. The apparatus of claim 23 , further comprising:

a temperature sensor for measuring the temperature inside the fuel tank; and

a data analysis module for utilizing one or more temperature measurements from inside the fuel tank in fuel tank leak size calculations.

29. The apparatus of claim 23 , further comprising a data analysis module for utilizing measurements of the fuel tank's vapor space in fuel tank leak size calculations.

30. The apparatus of claim 23 , further comprising a data analysis module for utilizing Reid Vapor Space measurements in fuel tank leak size calculations.

31. The apparatus of claim 23 further comprising means for detecting hydrocarbon vapor from an area outside of the fuel tank.

32. The apparatus of claim 31 , wherein the. means for detecting hydrocarbon vapor further comprises a wand placed near an area outside of the fuel tank, and wherein:

the fuel tank is pressurized;

a leak in the fuel tank may emit hydrocarbon vapor;

the wand is placed adjacent to the leak; and

a precise location of the leak is indicated by the presence of hydrocarbon vapor in a precise area outside the fuel tank.

33. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a source of pressurized gas connected to the pneumatic hose;

a pressure regulator for controlling the flow of gas from the source of pressurized gas to the fuel tank;

a pressure transducer for measuring the pressure level in the fuel tank;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes;

a housing enclosing at least one of the source of pressurized gas, the pressure regulator, the pressure transducer, or the processor; and

wherein at least a portion of the housing forms a calibration tank.

34. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a source of pressurized gas connected to the pneumatic hose;

a pressure regulator for controlling the flow of gas from the source of pressurized gas to the fuel tank;

a pressure transducer for measuring the pressure level in the fuel tank;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes; and

a tank adaptor interlock, wherein the tank adaptor interlock comprises means for preventing the tank adapter from being removed from the fuel tank unless the pressure inside the fuel tank is equal to a pressure of a testing environment.

35. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a vacuum device connected to the pneumatic hose, wherein the vacuum device is adapted to reduce the pressure inside the fuel tank below an ambient pressure;

a pressure regulator for controlling the pressure level inside the fuel tank;

a pressure transducer for measuring the pressure level in the fuel tank;

a memory device for electronically storing information;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes;

a housing enclosing at least one of the vacuum device, the pressure regulator, the pressure transducer, the memory device, or the processor; and

wherein at least a portion of the housing forms a calibration tank.

36. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a vacuum device connected to the pneumatic hose, wherein the vacuum device is adapted to reduce the pressure inside the fuel tank below an ambient pressure;

a pressure regulator for controlling the pressure level inside the fuel tank;

a pressure transducer for measuring the pressure level in the fuel tank;

a memory device for electronically storing information;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes; and

a tank adaptor interlock, wherein the tank adaptor interlock comprises means for preventing the tank adapter from being removed from the fuel tank unless the pressure inside the fuel tank is equal to a pressure of a testing environment.

37. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a cylinder connected to the pneumatic hose;

a piston disposed within the cylinder;

force application means for applying force to the piston

a sensor for determining the position of the piston within the cylinder;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes;

a housing enclosing at least one of the cylinder, the piston, the force application means, the sensor, or the processor; and

wherein at least a portion of the housing forms a calibration tank.

38. An apparatus for testing the integrity of a fuel tank, comprising:

a tank adaptor for forming an airtight seal with a fuel tank;

a pneumatic hose connected to the tank adaptor;

a cylinder connected to the pneumatic hose;

a piston disposed within the cylinder;

force application means for applying force to the piston

a sensor for determining the position of the piston within the cylinder;

a processor for calculating fuel tank leak sizes; and

a tank adaptor interlock, wherein the tank adaptor interlock comprises means for preventing the tank adapter from being removed from the fuel tank unless the pressure inside the fuel tank is equal to a pressure of a testing environment.
