Abstract

A pagewidth inkjet printhead includes an elongate support structure. A plurality of substantially identical printhead modules are mounted on the support structure in a contiguous orientation. Each printhead module includes an elongate printhead chip having a plurality of nozzle arrangements and defining a plurality of ink inlets in fluid communication with respective nozzle arrangements. An ink distribution assembly defines an elongate recess on one side in which the printhead chip is mounted, and a number of ink distribution conduits that converge from an opposite side to communicate with respective ink inlets of the printhead chip. An elongate ink feed member includes at least one longitudinally extending ink feed passage and a plurality of transverse openings in fluid communication with the ink feed passage and with respective ink distribution conduits in the ink distribution assembly. The ink feed modules are positioned on the support structure such that the ink feed passages of contiguous ink feed members are in fluid communication with each other.

Claims (13)

1. A pagewidth inkjet printhead which comprises

an elongate support structure;

a plurality of substantially identical printhead modules that are mounted on the support structure in an end-to-end orientation, each printhead module comprising

an elongate printhead chip having a plurality of nozzle arrangements and defining a plurality of ink inlets in fluid communication with respective nozzle arrangements;

an ink distribution assembly which defines an elongate recess on one side in which the printhead chip is mounted, and a number of ink distribution conduits that converge from an opposite side to communicate with respective ink inlets of the printhead chip; and

an elongate ink feed member which includes at least one longitudinally extending ink feed passage and a plurality of transverse openings in fluid communication with the ink feed passage and with respective ink distribution conduits in the ink distribution assembly,

the printhead modules being positioned on the support structure such that ink feed passages of contiguous ink feed members are in fluid communication with each other.

2. A pagewidth inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 1 , in which the support structure is a channel member of a resiliently flexible material and is dimensioned so that the printhead modules can be retained in position in the channel member due to the resilience of the material.

3. A pagewidth inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 2 , in which the ink distribution assembly comprises at least two ink distribution structures and an elongate printhead chip mounted on one of the ink distribution structures to receive ink from the ink distribution assembly, the channel member being dimensioned so that the printhead modules are retained in the channel member with the printhead chips in operational alignment and respective ink distribution conduits in the ink distribution structures in fluid communication with each other.

4. A pagewidth inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 1 , in which the channel member is of a 36% nickel iron alloy.

5. A pagewidth inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 1 , in which the ink distribution structures of each printhead module are an upper micro-molding that defines a recess in which the printhead chip is positioned and a lower micro-molding, the micro-moldings defining converging ink conduits that open into the recess and are in fluid communication with ink inlet openings of the printhead chip.

6. A pagewidth inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 5 , in which a film layer is interposed between each pair of upper and lower micro-moldings such that the ink distribution structure of each printhead module is laminated.

7. A pagewidth inkjet printhead as claimed in claim 5 , in which at least the upper micro-molding is of a liquid crystal polymer.
