Customized alerts for incoming data messages
View Patent ↗Methods, systems, and apparatuses are disclosed for presenting a custom alert to a recipient of an incoming data communication. A data communication is received from a sender. A custom alert is determined. The custom alert is to be presented on the recipient's communication device based on pre-defined rules established by the recipient. The custom alert is then presented to the recipient.
1. A method for presenting a custom alert to a recipient of an incoming data communication, comprising:
receiving, at the recipient's communications device, the data communication from a sender;
receiving a data message at the recipient's communications device, the data message comprising information specifying the custom alert to be presented on the recipient's communication device based on pre-defined rules established by the recipient; and
presenting the custom alert prior to receipt of the data communication at the recipient's communications device, the custom alert providing advance notice of the data communication.
2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the data communication is an email.
3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the data communication is a text message.
4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the data communication is an instant message.
5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein presenting the custom alert comprises visually presenting the custom alert.
6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein presenting the custom alert comprises audibly presenting the custom alert.
7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the pre-defined rules specify the custom alert based on the sender's data address.
8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the pre-defined rules specify the custom alert based on the recipient's data address.
9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the pre-defined rules specify the custom alert based on at least a portion of a subject line of the communication.
10. A method for presenting a custom alert to a recipient of a data communication, comprising:
receiving a data communication, the data communication initiated by a sender and intended for the recipient's communications device;
determining a custom alert to be presented to the recipient based on pre-defined rules established by the recipient;
configuring the customer alert to provide advance notice of the data communication sending a data message to the recipient's communications device that specifies the custom alert to be presented on the recipient's communication device in advance of receipt of the data communication; and
forwarding the data communication to the recipient's communications device.
11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising sending information describing the custom alert as a file that, when executed, presents audio content.
12. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising sending information describing the custom alert as a file that, when executed, presents visual content.
13. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising sending information describing the custom alert as a reference to a file stored on the recipient's communication device that, when executed, presents the custom alert.
14. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the pre-defined rules specify the custom alert based on the sender's data address.
15. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the pre-defined rules specify the custom alert based on the recipient's data address.
16. An apparatus, comprising:
means for receiving, at a recipient's communications device, the data communication from a sender;
means for storing a selection of alerts;
means for receiving a data message at the recipient's communications device, the data message comprising information specifying an alert to be presented on the recipient's communication device based on pre-defined rules established by the recipient;
means for configuring an alert to provide advance notice of the data communication;
means for selecting the alert from the selection of alerts; and
means for presenting the alert prior to receipt of the data communication at the recipient's communications device such that the alert provides advance notice of the data communication.
17. The apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising means for audibly presenting audio content that alerts of the data communication.
18. The apparatus of claim 16 , farther comprising means for visually presenting visual content that alerts of the data communication.
19. The apparatus according to claim 16 , farther comprising means for displaying visual content.
