Abstract

A printer includes a printer having a pagewidth inkjet printhead. Feedback lines from the printhead are coupled to a processor that controls the printhead. Signals conveyed on the feedback lines indicate parameters such as the temperature of the printhead, available printhead actuator voltage, actuator heater resistivity and actuator heater width. A firing pulse circuit processes the temperature and voltage signals on the feedback lines to generate firing pulses that are applied to the printhead. The firing pulse circuit includes sample and hold circuits and analog to digital converters that convert the temperature and voltage parameters to digital signals that are applied to a memory table. The memory table is loaded with values by the processor. The processor determines the memory table values on the basis of a user brightness setting, an ink viscosity curve, actuator heater resistivity, the actuator heater width and the voltage and resistivity signals. Consequently a pagewidth inkjet printer is provided with firing pulses that are dynamically adjusted according to the printhead's operating conditions.

Claims (17)

1. A printer including:

a pagewidth inkjet printhead;

a processor in communication with said printhead, the processor includes a firing pulse circuit arranged to produce printhead firing pulses;

a number of feedback lines coupling said printhead to the processor; wherein the processor controls said printhead in response to signals received via the feedback lines, the feedback lined being arranged to convey a first signal corresponding to a temperature of the pagewidth inkjet printhead, hereinafter referred to as Tsense, and a second signal corresponding to an available actuator voltage of the pagewidth inkjet printhead, hereinafter referred to as Vsense; such that,

the processor produces the printhead firing pulses in response to the Tsense and Vsense signals.

2. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is arranged to retrieve the ink viscosity function from a QA chip of an ink cartridge.

3. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein the processor includes a conversion circuit having a sample and hold circuit coupled to an analog-to-digital converter.

4. A printer according to claim 3 , wherein the firing pulse circuit includes a memory device containing a pulse duration table, said memory device being responsive to the analog-to-digital converter and arranged to generate pulse duration data.

5. A printer according to claim 4 , wherein the processor is arranged to write entries to the pulse duration table.

6. A printer according to claim 5 , wherein to processor is configured to write the entries to the pulse duration table as a function of one or more of the following: a user brightness setting; an ink viscosity curve; the actuator hearer resistivity; the actuator heater width; Vsense; Rsense.

7. A printer according to claim 4 , wherein the firing pulse circuit further includes a pulse width generator circuit responsive to the memory device and arranged to generate firing pulses in response to the pulse duration data.

8. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein said printhead comprises a number of segments and wherein the processor is arranged to selectively couple the feedback lines to one of the segments at any given time.

9. A printer according to claim 8 , wherein the feedback lines are coupled to the segments by means of a tri-state bus.

10. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein the actuator property includes at least one of:

available actuator voltage;

actuator heater resistivity; and,

actuator heater width.
