Abstract

A botulinum toxin pharmaceutical formulation free of animal derived proteins, comprising a botulinum toxin and a recombinant albumin, suitable for therapeutic administration to a human patient, and methods for treating patients with various diseases and afflictions with the formulation.

Claims (28)

1. A pharmaceutical composition, consisting essentially of

(a) a botulinum toxin;

(b) a caprylate;

(c) a recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA),

(d) a polysorbate 80 (P80), and;

(e) sodium chloride, wherein for each 100 units of the botulinum toxin there is present in the pharmaceutical composition, about 7 milligrams or about 13 micrograms of the caprylate, about 500 micrograms of the rHSA, about 0.04 micrograms of the P80 and about 900 micrograms of the sodium chloride, wherein said pharmaceutical composition weighs about 1.4 milligrams and has a % recovery after lyophilization and reconstitution with saline of greater than 90%.

2. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the botulinum toxin is present as a botulinum toxin complex.

3. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the botulinum toxin is present as a pure botulinum toxin.

4. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin serotypes A, B, C 1 , D, E, F and G.

5. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the botulinum toxin is botulinum toxin type A.

6. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 , wherein the caprylate is sodium caprylate.

7. A pharmaceutical composition, consisting essentially of:

(a) about 100 units of a botulinum toxin;

(b) about 13 micrograms of a caprylate;

(c) about 500 micrograms of a recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA); and

(d) about 900 micrograms of a sodium chloride,

wherein said pharmaceutical composition weighs about 1.4 milligrams and has a % recovery after lyophilization and reconstruction with saline of greater than 90%.

8. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein the botulinum toxin is present as a botulinum toxin complex.

9. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein the botulinum toxin is present as a pure botulinum toxin.

10. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin serotypes A, B, C 1 , D, E, F and G.

11. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein the botulinum toxin is botuliniim toxin type A.

12. A pharmaceutical composition, comprising:

(a) a botulinum toxin type A;

(b) a caprylate;

(c) recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA), and;

(d) sodium chloride, wherein for each about 100 units of the botulinum toxin type A there is present in the pharmaceutical composition, about 7 micrograms or about 13 micrograms of the caprylate, about 500 micrograms of the rHSA, and about 900 micrograms of the sodium chloride, wherein said pharmaceutical composition weighs about 1 .4 milligrams and has a % recovery after lyophilization and reconstitution with saline of greater than 90%.

13. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 12 further comprising zinc.

14. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 13 wherein for each 100 units of the botulinum toxin there is present in pharmaceutical composition about 4 micrograms of zinc.
