Abstract

Disclosed herein are exemplary techniques for initiating a direct wireless link between two wireless devices. The system and method include transmitting, from a first wireless device, a first frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, wherein the first frame includes direct link information encapsulated at the logical link control level; receiving, at the first wireless device, a second frame from a second wireless device, the second frame having a destination MAC address and being intended for the first wireless device, wherein the second frame includes direct link information encapsulated at the logical link control level; and establishing a direct wireless link between the first wireless device and the second wireless device when a third frame is transmitted from the first wireless device, the third frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, wherein the third frame includes direct link information encapsulated at the logical link control level.

Claims (49)

1. A method for initiating a direct wireless link between a first wireless device and a second wireless device, performed at the first wireless device, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting a first MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device from the first wireless device to the second wireless device, wherein the first MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the first MAC data frame;

receiving a second MAC data frame at the first wireless device from the second wireless device, the second MAC data frame having a destination MAC address of the first wireless device, wherein the second MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the second MAC data frame;

transmitting a third MAC data frame from the first wireless device to the second wireless device, the third MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, wherein the third MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the third MAC data frame;

establishing a direct wireless data link between the first wireless device and the second wireless device utilizing parameters contained in the direct link information encapsulated at the logical link level in the third MAC data frame;

wherein the first wireless device and the second wireless device are peer stations.

The method as in claim 1 , wherein prior to the first wireless device transmitting the first MAC data frame, the first wireless device transmits a test frame to the second wireless device to confirm that the second wireless device is within a wireless transmission range of the first wireless device.

3. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the logical link control level encapsulation includes a capability information field including data representative of the communication capabilities of the device transmitting the frame including the logical control level encapsulation.

The method as in claim 3 , wherein the capability information field of the first MAC data frame contains proposed capabilities of the first wireless device, wherein the capability information field of the second MAC data frame contains proposed capabilities of the second wireless device, and wherein the capability information field of the third MAC data frame contains a selection of communication capabilities that overlap between the capabilities of the first wireless device and the capabilities of the second wireless device.

5. The method as in claim 4 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one compression type.

6. The method as in claim 4 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one PHY rate.

7. The method as in claim 4 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one encryption capability.

8. The method as in claim 3 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one encryption capability.

9. The method as in claim 3 , wherein the first, second, and third MAC data frames are secured by a pairwise encryption key.

The method as in claim 3 , wherein the logical link control level encapsulation includes an information elements field preceded by a key material type field, and wherein the key material type field contains a type and a context and wherein the type indicates a cipher suite to be used in the direct wireless link.

11. The method as in claim 10 , wherein the cipher suite is the cipher suite associated with an access point within the transmitting range of both the first wireless device and the second wireless device.

12. A first wireless device that can initiate a direct wireless link with a second wireless device, the first wireless device comprises:

a transmitter configured to transmit a first MAC data frame and a third MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, from the first wireless device to the second wireless device, wherein the first and third MAC data frames include logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the respective first and third MAC data frames;

a receiver, configured to receive a second MAC data frame from a second wireless device, the second MAC data frame having a destination MAC address of the first wireless device, wherein the second MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the second MAC data frame;

a processor configured to establish a direct wireless data link between the first wireless device and the second wireless device utilizing parameters contained in the direct link information encapsulated at the logical link level in the third MAC data frame

wherein the first wireless device and the second wireless device are peer stations.

The first wireless device as in claim 12 , wherein the the transmitter is further configured to, prior to transmitting the first MAC data frame, transmit a test frame to the second wireless device to confirm that the second wireless device is within a wireless transmission range of the first wireless device.

14. The first wireless device as in claim 12 , wherein the logical link control level encapsulation includes a capability information field including data representative of the communication capabilities of the device transmitting the frame including the logical control level encapsulation.

The first wireless device as in claim 12 , wherein the capability information field of the first MAC data frame contains proposed capabilities, wherein the capability information field of the second MAC data frame contains proposed capabilities of the second wireless device, and wherein the capability information field of the third MAC data frame contains a selection of communication capabilities that overlap between the capabilities of the first wireless device and the capabilities of the second wireless device.

16. The first wireless device as in claim 15 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one compression type.

17. The first wireless device as in claim 15 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one PHY rate.

18. The first wireless device as in claim 15 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one encryption capability.

19. The first wireless device as in claim 15 , wherein data included in the capability information field of the first MAC data frame includes at least one encryption capability.

20. The first wireless device as in claim 14 , wherein the first, second, and third MAC data frames are secured by a pairwise encryption key.

21. The first wireless device as in claim 14 , wherein the logical link control level encapsulation includes an information elements field preceded by a key material type field, and wherein the key material type field contains a type and a context and wherein the type indicates a cipher suite to be used in the direct wireless link.

22. The first wireless device as in claim 21 , wherein the cipher suite is the cipher suite associated with an access point within the transmitting range of both the first wireless device and the second wireless device.

23. A method for initiating a direct wireless link between two wireless devices in the communicating range of an access point, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting, from a first wireless device to a second wireless device, via the access point, a first MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, wherein the first MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the first MAC data frame;

receiving, at the first wireless device, via the access point, a second MAC data frame from the second wireless device, the second MAC data frame having a destination MAC address of the first wireless device, wherein the second MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the first MAC data frame;

transmitting a third MAC data frame from the first wireless device to the second wireless device, via the access point, the third MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, wherein the third MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the third MAC data frame; and

establishing a direct wireless data link between the first wireless device and the second wireless device utilizing parameters contained in the direct link information encapsulated at the logical link level in the third MAC data frame.

24. A method for initiating a direct wireless link between two wireless devices in the communicating range of an access point, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting, from a first wireless device to a second wireless device via the access point, a first MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, wherein the first MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the first MAC data frame;

receiving, at the first wireless device, via the access point, a second MAC data frame from the second wireless device, the second MAC data frame having a destination MAC address of the first wireless device, wherein the second MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the second MAC data frame;

establishing, at the first wireless device, a direct wireless link between the first wireless device and the second wireless device utilizing overlapping communications parameters contained within the direct link information of the first and second MAC data frames.

25. A system, wherein a first wireless device is adapted to initiate a direct wireless link with a second wireless device, the first wireless device comprises:

a transmitter configured to transmit a first MAC data frame and a third MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, from the first wireless device to the second wireless device, wherein the first MAC data frame and third MAC data frame include logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the respective first and third MAC data frames;

a receiver, configured to receive a second MAC data frame from a second wireless device, the second MAC data frame having a destination MAC address of the first wireless device, wherein the second MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the second MAC data frame;

a processor configured to establish a direct wireless data link between the first wireless device and the second wireless device utilizing parameters contained in the direct link information encapsulated at the logical link level in the third MAC data frame.

26. A first wireless device that can initiate a direct wireless link with a second wireless device, the first wireless device comprises:

means for transmitting a first MAC data frame and a third MAC data frame having a destination media access control (MAC) address of the second wireless device, from the first wireless device to the second wireless device wherein the first MAC data frame and third MAC data frame include logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the respective first and third MAC data frames;

means for receiving a second MAC data frame from a second wireless device, the second MAC data frame having a destination MAC address of the first wireless device, wherein the second MAC data frame includes logical link control level direct link information encapsulated within the second MAC data frame;

means for establishing a direct wireless data link between the first wireless device and the second wireless device utilizing parameters contained in the direct link information encapsulated at the logical link level in the third MAC data frame.

27. The wireless device of claim 26 , wherein the means for transmitting the first and third MAC data frames is further configured to transmit a test frame to the second wireless device, prior to transmitting the first and third MAC data frames, to confirm that the second wireless device is within a wireless transmission range of the first wireless device.
