Abstract

A method for actively suspending a real plant in a vehicle includes modifying a control signal on the basis of a difference between a property of the real plant, as indicated by the response of the real plant to the control signal, and a property of a nominal plant.

Claims (21)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a vehicle having a plant, the plant having a plant position;

an active suspension including an electromagnetic actuator coupled to the plant; and

a force bias eliminator having the dynamic characteristic of a variable stiffness spring coupled to the plant;

a source of at least one motion signal indicative of motion of the plant;

wherein the active suspension further comprises a control module responsive to the at least one motion signal to provide a bias control signal to the force bias eliminator to cause the force bias eliminator to output a bias force for causing the actuator to experience a zero mean load;

the active suspension being configured to have a plurality of operation modes, including an active mode and a passive mode.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured to automatically switch between the active mode and the passive mode in response to detection of an event.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured to switch between the active mode and the passive mode in response to a user selection.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic actuator has terminal leads that are shorted in the passive mode.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the force bias eliminator has a first spring characteristic in the active mode and a second spring characteristic in the passive mode.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic actuator is configured to adjust the plant position in the active mode.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the force bias eliminator is configured to adjust the plant position in the passive mode.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic actuator is disabled from providing active force in the passive mode, the force bias eliminator controlling the plant position in the passive mode.

9. A method for suspending a seat using an active suspension system including an electromagnetic actuator, a source of at least one motion signal indicative of motion of the seat and a force bias eliminator having the dynamic characteristic of a variable stiffness spring;

wherein the force bias eliminator further comprises a control module responsive to the at least one motion signal to provide a bias control signal to the force bias eliminator, the method comprising;

selectively switching between operating the active suspension in an active mode and in a passive mode;

controlling the seat position in the active mode with the actuator and the force bias eliminator and controlling the seat position in the passive mode with the force bias eliminator.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein selectively switching comprises automatically switching in response to detection of an event.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the event comprises a failure of the active suspension system.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the event comprises a user selection.
