Abstract

A method for manufacturing a vehicle frame assembly includes the initial steps of providing first and second structural components, disposing portions of the first and second structural components in an overlapping relationship, and generating an electromagnetic field that causes at least one of the overlapping portions of the first and second structural components to move into contact with the other of the overlapping portions of the first and second structural components at a high velocity so as to be joined together to form a joint. Third and fourth structural components are provided. The third and fourth structural components are joined to the first and second structural components together to form a vehicle frame assembly.

Claims (22)

1. A method for manufacturing a vehicle frame assembly comprising the steps of:

(a) providing a first structural component;

(b) hydroforming the first structural component to a desired shape;

(c) providing a second structural component;.

(d) disposing portions of the first and second structural components in an overlapping relationship;

(e) generating an electromagnetic field that causes at least one of the overlapping portions of the first and second structural components to move into contact with the other of the overlapping portions of the first and second structural components so as to be joined together to form a joint;

(f) providing third and fourth structural components; and

(g) joining the third and fourth structural components to the first and second structural components together to form a vehicle frame assembly.

The method defined in claim 1 wherein the first structural component comprises a vehicle frame side rail, and the second structural component comprises a vehicle frame cross member, at least one of the structural components having a joining portion selected from the group consisting of a boss, a flange, and a tab.

3. The method defined in claim 2 wherein step (d) is performed by disposing the joining portion of one of the structural components in an overlapping relationship with a portion of the other of the structural components.

The method defined in claim 2 wherein step (a) is performed by providing a side rail having a boss, and step (c) is performed by providing a cross member having a hollow end portion, and step (d) is performed by disposing the end portion of the cross member in an overlapping relationship with the boss of the side rail.

5. The method defined in claim 2 wherein step (a) is performed by providing a side rail having a flange, and step (d) is performed by disposing the flange in an overlapping relationship with a portion of the cross member.

6. The method defined in claim 5 wherein step (a) is performed by providing a side rail having an opening and having a flange adjacent the opening, and step (d) is performed by inserting the cross member through the opening such that the flange is disposed in an overlapping relationship with a portion of the cross member.

7. The method defined in claim 2 wherein step (c) is performed by providing a cross member having a tab, and step (d) is performed by disposing the tab in an overlapping relationship with a portion of the side rail.

8. The method defined in claim 7 wherein step (c) is performed by providing a cross member having a plurality of tabs, and step (d) is performed by disposing the tabs in an overlapping relationship with portions of the side rail.

9. The method defined in claim 8 wherein step (c) is performed by providing a cross member having a first pair of longitudinally extending tabs and a second pair of laterally extending tabs.

10. The method defined in claim 8 wherein step (c) is performed by providing a cross member having a pair of longitudinally extending tabs and having a laterally extending tab that extends toward the interior of the cross member.

11. The method defined in claim 1 wherein step (a) is performed by providing a first structural component having a closed channel cross sectional shape.

12. The method defined in claim 1 wherein the first and second structural components are made from the same metal of alloys of metal.

13. The method defined in claim 1 wherein the first and second structural components are made from different metals or alloys of metals.

14. The method defined in claim 1 wherein step (e) is performed by providing an electromagnetic coil about the overlapping end portions of the first and second structural components and connecting the electromagnetic coil to a source of electrical energy so as to generate the electromagnetic field.

15. The method defined in claim 14 wherein the electromagnetic coil is placed concentrically about the overlapping portions of the first and second structural components.
