Abstract

An ophthalmic surgical cassette for removably receiving in a cassette receiving mechanism of an ophthalmic surgical system. The system includes first and second plunger valves. The cassette includes a body having a rear surface, an irrigation inlet for receiving irrigation fluid from a source, a first irrigation outlet for providing irrigation fluid to a first ophthalmic microsurgical instrument for use in an anterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedure, a first manifold fluidly coupling the irrigation inlet with the first irrigation outlet, a second irrigation outlet for providing irrigation fluid to a second ophthalmic microsurgical instrument for use in a posterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedure, and a second manifold fluidly coupling the irrigation inlet with the second irrigation outlet. The surgical cassette greatly simplifies a combined anterior segment and posterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedure by eliminating the need for separate anterior segment and posterior segment cassettes for the combined procedure.

Claims (17)

1. An ophthalmic surgical cassette for removably receiving in a cassette receiving mechanism of an ophthalmic surgical system, said system comprising first and second plunger valves, said cassette comprising:

a body having a rear surface;

an irrigation inlet for receiving irrigation fluid from a source;

a first irrigation outlet for providing irrigation fluid to a first ophthalmic microsurgical instrument for use in an anterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedure;

a first manifold fluidly coupling said irrigation inlet with said first irrigation outlet, said first manifold at least partially disposed proximate said rear surface so as to allow operative engagement with said first plunger valve during at least a posterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedure;

a second irrigation outlet for providing irrigation fluid to a second ophthalmic microsurgical instrument for use in said posterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedure;

a second manifold fluidly coupling said irrigation inlet with said second irrigation outlet, said second manifold at least partially disposed proximate said rear surface so as to allow operative engagement with said second plunger valve during at least said anterior segment ophthalmic surgical procedure;

a vacuum chamber for fluidly coupling with a source of vacuum;

a first aspiration port for providing vacuum to said first ophthalmic microsurgical instrument; and

a third manifold fluidly coupling said vacuum chamber and said first aspiration port.

2. The ophthalmic surgical cassette of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second aspiration port for providing vacuum to said second ophthalmic microsurgical instrument; and

a fourth manifold fluidly coupling said vacuum chamber and said second aspiration port.

3. The ophthalmic surgical cassette of claim 2 , wherein said vacuum chamber comprises a vacuum chamber port having a generally oval-shaped geometry, and wherein said third manifold and said fourth manifold are fluidly coupled to said vacuum chamber port.

4. The ophthalmic surgical cassette of any one of the preceding claims presented in a package comprising:

a container having an interior and an opening to said interior; and

a cover removably coupled to said container and disposed over said opening.
