Abstract

The invention features an optical medium for calibrating UV absorbance detectors, methods for making such an optical medium, and methods for calibrating UV absorbance detectors using such a medium. The optical calibration medium includes a gel-sol silica glass monolith with a rare-earth dopant therein. The rare-earth dopant exhibits at least one spectral feature in at least the far UV range. The constituents of the gel-sol silica glass monolith are selected so the rare-earth doped sol-gel glass monolith exhibits a transmittance in the far UV range so each distinct spectral feature of the rare-earth dopant in the far UV range is discernable. In a specific embodiment, the rare-earth dopant includes atoms of erbium, having spectral features in a range from about 190 nm to about 650 nm and a distinguishable far UV spectral feature at about 257 nm.

Claims (12)

1 . A calibration medium for an absorbance detector; comprising:

a sol-gel glass monolith having an erbium nitrate dopant therein forming a rare-earth doped sol-gel glass calibration medium said erbium nitrate dopant doped in a concentration of erbium from about 6 percent to about 10 percent weight percent; and

wherein constituents of the gel-sol glass monolith are selected so the rare-earth doped sol-gel glass monolith exhibits a transmittance in the far UV range so spectral features of the rare-earth dopant in the far UV range are discernable.

2 . The calibration medium of claim 1 , wherein said spectral feature of the rare-earth dopant in the far UV range that is discernible is within the far UV range having a wavelength of approximately 257 nm.

3 . The calibration medium of claim 1 , wherein said sol-gel glass calibration medium exhibits a transmittance of approximately 50 percent at a wavelength of approximately 250 nm.

4 . The calibration medium of claim 1 , wherein said sensor assembly produces a signal upon receiving light having a wavelength of approximately 257 nm.

5 . The calibration medium of claim 1 , wherein said absorbance detector is selected from the group consisting of tunable UV absorbance detectors, PDA based absorbance detectors, UV spectrophotometers and fluorescence detectors

6 . An optical instrument calibration medium for use in an optical instrument having a spectral light source, said spectral light source capable of emitting light in the far UV range which light travels along a light path and which light comprises at least one wavelength, means for receiving sample within said light path, and a sensor assembly for receiving light and producing a signal, said sensor assembly producing a signal upon receiving light having said wavelength; comprising:

a sol-gel glass monolith, said sol-gel glass monolith configured to be positioned within said light path, said sol-gel glass monolith having an erbium nitrate dopant therein forming a rare-earth doped sol-gel glass calibration medium, said erbium nitrate dopant doped in a concentration of erbium from about 6 percent to about 10 percent weight percent, said concentration causing the rare-earth doped sol-gel glass calibration medium to exhibit a discernible transmittance in the far UV range, wherein the far UV range is between 190 nm and 300 nm and so at least one spectral feature of the rare-earth dopant in the far UV range is discernible and corresponds to a control value to allow the sensor assembly receiving light having a wavelength corresponding to the control value to be calibrated.

7 . The optical instrument calibration medium of claim 6 , wherein said spectral feature of the rare-earth dopant in the far UV range that is discernible is within the far UV range having a wavelength of approximately 257 nm.

8 . The optical instrument calibration medium of claim 6 , wherein said sol-gel glass calibration medium exhibits a transmittance of approximately 50 percent at a wavelength of approximately 250 nm.

9 . The optical instrument calibration medium of claim 6 , wherein said sensor assembly produces a signal upon receiving light having a wavelength of approximately 257 nm.
